Prototyping Male Connector

NOTE: As a correct answer has been received and marked, I will not be following up on further responses. Once I've measured and modeled the connector I'll happily share the drawing file here.

Hi all,

I have a personal project that needs to interface with a port that uses a physical configuration that is believed to be proprietary. To provide a stable interface with the port, I would like to prototype a male connector but I don't think I'll be able to directly measure some of the dimensions of the existing female connector because of the scale and unique configuration. Does anyone have experience with using a temporarily malleable material to create a form of a female connector so that measurements can be taken of the negative mold of the connector? Any suggestions on what materials or products might be helpful for this purpose?

Hi Nathan Contact your dentist as they have materials that will make an excellent detaled impression. They use an impression material called alginate to make impressions of prepared teeth so that they can have a crown cast. Once you have the impression you will have a way to get your measurements.

Interesting suggestion! Do you have any thoughts about the potential for residue to be left in the port? There's a sliding cover that recesses into the port when the male connector is inserted that seems like it has a lot of potential to collect and retain the molding material (alginate or otherwise).

I'm starting to think that maybe taking a block of material the approximate size of the outer dimensions of the female connector, conservatively subtracting material based on initial measurements, and using fine subtraction from the prototype material until it adequately fits the female connector. This would allow me to minimize introducing foreign material into the female connector by thoroughly cleaning the prototype before testing for fit.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

I was thinking more of some sort of program that hooks up to a camera, and you could have a data base with certain faces in it and you could add and subtract people. It could recognize certain points in your face. For example it would notice where the tip of your nose is and where the top is and measure it
