6v motor not working as expected

Hi Will,

I have been playing with motors like this since childhood, it seems that the Brushes of the motor have Worn Out or are not in contact with the Commutator, or one of the three Windings are not working.. I would suggest you open up the motor and inspect the brushes and the windings and also clean the insides with WD-40 or something similar..

Hi Will, Do you have a 6 volt battery you can try it on. It looks to me like the current draw of the motor is causing the wall wart to do a current overload shut down. If you can get it to spin continuously on a battery this is likely the cause. There may still be something wrong with the brushes or a partially shorted rotor winding, as suggested by Saurabh, which is causing the current overload. Usually if it they have a bad communtaor or winding they will have a dead spot where they do not start and then will spin if started manually.

It seems you're right John, I tried it with various different batteries and the motor span continuously.

It still doesn't explain why the wall wart was doing overload shutdowns because it was rated at 1 A which I would assume is far more than the motor requires.

I did forgot that you were using a wall wart, but if the other motor is working fine with it, then still the problem is with this motor, there must be some metal dust collected between the commutator, which might be causing short and overloading the wall wart, I will still suggest you to to open up the motor and clean it with WD-40 or something, also inspect the windings and the brushes..

How do you suggest I open it up? The only possible join is between the

plastic and the metal casing.

These motors are not that hard to open as they are not glued or screwed together, the plastic half slides inside the metal cover and 2 metal  clips at the side, just bend those out and the plastic part will slide out from the metal casing..

Hi Will, If you take your motor apart it is a good idea to put an alignment mark on it as you will change and polarity of it if you put it back together 180 degrees from normal.
