dc generator

I want to use a dc motor to charge a cellphone, how would I choose an off the shelf dc motor to use as the generator? I am looking at something like this  https://www.amazon.com/2-5KG-Micro-Speed-Reducing-Motor/dp/B009AQLDSS/ref=pd_day0_469_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=K49X1E2DXFR58MMTJ742. I am assuming if I can match the rpm it should be close to the running specs? I would like a similar current but higher voltage to step down to 5 volts, however I am think a buck/boost converter would be adequate?

    Hi James, It is a matter of conservation of energy. You can not get more power out than is put into the system. In most cases like this one you will get a lot less out than is put in due to heat losses…

    Much as I hate to be 'that guy,' you will never be able to run that reduction gear backward.

    Hi James,

    I agree with Don on this. Even if you can get the motor to spin with no load as soon as you load it by trying to charge a battery the force needed multiplied by the gear up factor will exceed the strength of the gears and their shafts. Just out of curiosity what was your plan for a source of power to turn the motor?

    I was wanting to drive it by a sterling engine. did ben ever do a video on windmills? That is as close to a sterling engine without it being one.

    I would suggest doing it the way the windmill people do it:  Get some (high Al) ferrite rods from ebay.  Wrap magnet wires around them and fix them in a circle.  Hook diodes to them so they all sploosh current into your catch capacitor or battery.  That's your stator.  For your rotor use neodymium magnets, arrayed in a similar circle.  The whole shebang is typically made of plywood.  You will also need a bearing.

    You could try a bicycle generator like this - they cost $6 - $7. Or maybe a small alternator.

    However you will need a pretty powerful Stirling engine to drive a generator that develops any significant current.

    You might be able to get a little power out of a Sterling engine if you have a really stiff cold side.  I'm thinking the Frazier river, maybe.  I wonder how they stack up versus a stack of Peltier devices in your application.

    the motor i have outputs 7 volts no load I bought an emergency charger uses two  AA batteries from dollar tree and it charges the phone from the Stirling engine however current is lacking , is there anyway i can convert the voltage t a higher current efficiently?

    Hi James,

    It is a matter of conservation of energy. You can not get more power out than is put into the system. In most cases like this one you will get a lot less out than is put in due to heat losses. If you multiply the voltage by the current (in Amps) you will have a number for the power in Watts. Any process that would increase the current will correspondingly lower the voltage. For example the power of 7 volts at 2 amps is equivalent to the power of 2 volts at 7 amps. In a system where you are wanting to charge a battery however it is necessary to have a voltage level that is above the voltage of the battery so that current can be made to flow back into the battery. The only way to get more current in your situation will be to put more power into the system by spinning your generator faster.
