Ben Heck gives an update on the much anticipated Portable N64 and requests help from the community with completing the build.  A portable N64 is one of the most frequently requested builds from members but is difficult to hack because it’s easy to damage and requires a lot of rewiring to make it portable.  Specifically, Ben needs help getting the RAM expansion to work. Help Ben finish his N64 Portable in the comments below!

    I think the problem is actually in the timing for the ram, (15cm/ns in copper wire if I remember correctly) Because of the way the board is routed I think the traces are calculated to have the suitable…

    Ben,

     

    Contact Schmartboard http://schmartboard.com/.

    I'd salvage the original connector and solder it to a Schmartboard and connect it with a flat ribbon cable with the same pitch soldered to the original pads of the N64 - you'd get the flexibility to bend it 90 degrees but also the right connectivity.  The shorter the better.

    Here is (a scan of) a Direct RAMBUS Technical Description: http://www.rambus.org/legal/ftc/Evidence/CX1845.PDF. I believe this is a later version than the Base RDRAM (and later Concurrent RDRAM) used in the N64.

    Here is (a scan of) the Base RDRAM Design Guide: http://www.rambus.org/legal/ftc/Evidence/CX1840.PDF. It's logical layer only, but it lists some signals at least.

    What about a connector that is like a SO-DIMM socket that would be used in a laptop.  That way the RAMPACK board could be laid flat, but could still be removed if needed??

    Hey maybe you could make a custom double-sided circuit board and just transfer the module on the top and make the pins on the bottom.

    I think the problem is actually in the timing for the ram,  (15cm/ns in copper wire if I remember correctly)
    Because of the way the board is routed I think the traces are calculated to have the suitable lenght to ensure proper timing.
    I had issues with my N64 (preordered it for the EU-Launch) with the expansion pack when the pack was not perfectly seated, I had to remove a sticker to seat it right to get it working.
    When I first installed the expansion Pack (came packed in with Perfect Dark ("best FPS ever....on N64") I thought it was broken, or I had to play the stripped down (nopn expansion) battle mode to unlock the game.
    Maybe the solution is to keep the bus intact ,but to modify the expansion pack itself , cutting the pcb and bending it 90° will not manipulate the trace length as much as addtional wires.

    Is it because of the orientation of the cartridge slot?  Why not let the memory pak go in like normal, even build a hump into the portable case or even a hole to remove it just like on the N64 so it still works, then make the cartridge slot load up from the bottom and hang out like Game Boy games did in the Game Boy Advance?
