Anytime I see Felix snd Ben together on the screen at the same moment, it is comedy gold. Felix can drop a burn more deadpan than most. I will miss you guys and the new guys too. But Felix and Ben are like Sindri and Brock from Norse Mythology and the internet is thier Loki. The Æsir and the Vanir weep at your leaving the hall of the gods.

are those cheap portable ones worth starting with?
have a look at jw0752 blogs.

You really need to ensure you know the frequency of the signal, otherwise what should be a nice square wave, becomes more like a sine wave, or seriouslt low due to the oscilloscope.
There are plenty of good quality 2nd hand older scopes around that may offer better value for money.

Yes, any oscilloscope is better than no oscilloscope if you need one. In last two decades, cheap electronics have improved to level that is almost always worth it. There are still some dangerous power supplies, but I don't think you'll find an oscilloscope that could fry the thing you are testing with it.
