SEGA Genesis VS Super Nintendo

Ben Heck recently broke down the Sega Genesis and a Super Nintendo to scientifically prove which 16 Bit console was the best. Which console do you think was better?

Not having ever used either one or watched Ben's video, I went with the SEGA Genesis since it has a 68000 CPU. I have very fond memories of programming and writing compilers for the 68000. It's a very…

mcb1 , frankly it sounded clear to me that is a 16 bit with internal 32 bit architecture. Despite the wiki I remember this CPU. It was the "revolution" as I have used before the 6502 processor. Wiki says…

I'm just gonna counter with Streets of Rage 2 and call it a day.

Though I will say Starfox has a special place in gaming for me since it was the first polyginal 3d game I ever played.

Hardware wise the Super Nintendo is the better console, and I cannot nor will I dispute it is the king of JRPGs, or how impactful Mario, Metroid, and Zelda are. However I like the genesis more. It isn't something as simple as 'I bought into the marketing' or ' I'm a sega fanboy' it's just I had more fun on more sega games. I liked racing on sega. I preferred madden on the sega. Streets of rage 2 is my go-to beat em up. Even now the romhacks floating around for the sega are inventive, nutty, wild, often times make me wonder what the creator was smoking and if they'll share, and just plain enjoyable.

I'm not going to say the Super Nintendo is a bad console, far from it. However keep this in mind. Would nintendo have worked so hard if they hadn't seen Sega succeed? Oh sure the turbo graphics might have filled sega's role in the west had sega not happened, but I mantain nintendo made the super nintendo in response to Sega's sudden Godzilla'ing through the market.

That said I am ALMOST tempted to give this one to the super nintendo expressly because it uses the same CPU the apple IIGS uses. as a retro geek I can appreciate this on its own merits.

I agree, Super Nintendo all the way. I think the Genesis had all the Disney and Sonic games, which were all quite fun, but not being able to save on a lot of games was endlessly frustrating. I remember playing Sonic Spinball and finally got to level 6 and then died. UGH! And really, you can't beat the Mario world when it comes to old school console games.

I Had to chose Super Nintendo, because it's my childhood, I remember wasting many hours playing Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, Yoshi's Island, Donkey Kong Country, and so many more games. Ah... Memories.

I go with Sega. I had both consoles, but games for sega were better for my taste.

After a cursory search, it looks like the 68000 had three 16-bit ALUs: one for the upper 16 bits of an address register, one for the lower 16 bits of an address register, and one for data. The 32-bit ISA is microcode magic.

Or you could go the Jaguar route and claim that it's a 48-bit machine.
