DIY Arduino Helicopter Collective Joystick Control -- Episode 440

I love to fly in simulators, especially helicopters. But, there is just not an affordable collective control that I have found, so I decided to make one for myself! I am going to build a joystick using an Arduino Micro, with a bunch of buttons for assignable controls and a high quality encoder for the collective axis.

    They should all be on the Bill of Materials above. There are four ITW switches, three toggles, and the hat switch. Toggles are the "C & K" switches.

    Hey Joe, You are right, the one in the "Base" directory is the right one. Iterative design with poor cleanup or just lost in a mountain of files. Sorry for the mixup!

     

    I will see about getting the file here updated. Let me know how the build goes, would love to see pics!

    HI Kaleb, thank you for a great maker project, already got the maechnical part done, but was wondeing where you can get hold of the Controllers Lite software you used in the video, searched Goggle etc, but no joy, hope you can help. All the best.

    Hi Kaleb,

     

    I loved this project of yours but after watching a video of Tom Stantons when he did a video of a helicopter not a drone, it got me thinking bout building a helicopter again.

     

    What I've been going over is I want to build a coaxial rotor design, with a full swashplate and collective control, but with one motor, to closer model a real world helicopter.  What I'm trying to figure out is how I can run both rotors but have the ability to adjust the speed of each rotor to give me yaw control.  Any thoughts, I was either looking at a clutch design, or a geared design similar to that of a CVT to control the rotational speed of the two rotors.  But my ultimate design goal is to use one motor.

     

    Then see if I can link it up to your helicopter control.

    Good to all, I am looking at the diagram and I get the impression that there are more push buttons and switches than in the list of components .. Does anyone who is assembling the device have the list of components to be able to order and buy them?

    You have two different friction plates.  One in the the 'Base' directory that has a newer date on it, and the other one directory above it with 3 other files.  Since the one in the Base directory matches the design, I am assuming that we should be using that one.  But what is/was the other one for?
