DIY Dance Dance Revolution Mat -- Episode 471

 

I LOVED those dance machines in arcades where you would jump on different arrows to music. But I always too shy to get on one in front of everyone! Now you can make your own touch sensitive dance mat to play on for hours in the comfort of your own home. This dance mat uses a Circuit Playground Express to create touch sensitive arrows that you have to dance on before your time runs out. The more arrows you hit, the faster the game goes. It’s quite a workout!

    Not sure you want to see me dancing but I just heard that a group of kids in New York have built their own based on the article and from watching your video.

    Thank you. What do you recommend we should do if we want to show arrows on a separate screen corresponding to steps? I don’t think Microsoft Makecode works as no two way interface from CPX. Any other solutions?

    Hi, these are graphics added to the video after filming. i'm watching the lights on the Circuit Playground Express for my arrows to show me where to put my feet.

  • I have a question about arrows that show up on screen around 13 minute mark on video (on right hand side of the frame). I realize that when you hop on one of the squares these arrows go up/down. How is that coded? Is there a program included that can display what's happening on the display? (like step mania). thanks

  • Pump It Up used to be my drug of choice in my late teens/early 20s. This brought back some great memories and gave me some ideas for future builds!

     

    Also: regarding project failures, you should see my Portable PlayStation Classic! That was a boondoggle!

    Yes, the capacitive sensing needs to have a charge difference.

    If you include the ground plane, you set up two plates for the sensing to work.

  • I built one of these back at the end of last year and had similar issues to you. I believe the issue is that you need to be grounded for the capacitive sensors to work well. It worked a lot better if you kept one foot on the floor or held someone's hand.

    Those circuit playground boards can act as a keyboard so you can send the signals to a PC or Pi to play games with them. I got it running Stepmania with an Adafruit speaker bonnet driving a couple of small speakers. I never got around to boxing it up properly so its just a thick slab of MDF and the circuit playground flashing disco lights at the front.
