A multimeter is the go-to tool for electronics measurements. Knowing how to use it to measure voltage, current, diodes, and transistors can save time (and frustration) while troubleshooting. James explains how the multimeter works so that you can understand what it is doing while using it.

A metal detector or a stud finder should detect metal strips.

    Hi James,

What equipment / techniques might you use to assess the health of audio frequency inductive loop system (AFILS) copper tapes ?

    https://www.ampetronic.co/products/flat-copper-tape/

When installed they are usually fairly low resistance at 0.1 to 10 ohms, otherwise the amplifiers they connect to stop operating.

As they tend to be installed under floor coverings they can be difficult to inspect visually, however are at risk of corrosion from contact with concrete, cuts from carpet fitters knives, moisture from carpet cleaning/leaks/spills, shorts from drawing pins/staples, and leakage to earth where they cross metal conduits etc.

I suspect that a milliohm meter with Kelvin four-wire probes might be a good starting point to measure the end-to-end resistance and then an insulation tester to measure from tape to earth.

In addition to this what cable tracing equipment might be suitable to acuratelly locate the exact path of such tapes under the floor covering ?
