    You never know just how clean a lab power supply really is until you test it.

     

    Also, lab power supplies have different requirements to meet than a fixed power supply, so in most cases, a fixed power supply designed specifically for powering up a certain type of circuit, will perform much much better than a lab power supply.

    Those are very tricky requirements. These are the uses I came up with, that don't require it to power a circuit:

     

    - Door stop.

    - Movie prop.

    - A toddler could sit on it, as if it were a chair.

     

    A short circuit is still a circuit, but if it were allowed, you could use it to heat a small room.

    You idea is related to remote monitoring while my idea is controlling everything through PC keyboard shortcuts.

    Hello all.

    My husband is a self made amateur photographer, he does lots of high speed and and black light shoots as well as macro of science and nature and I help by building and creating for him. Lately, he has been getting into various ways of creating standing waves, like pvc with he's drilled into it pressuried with propane and a speaker at one end, producing fire as a standing wave, as well as with sand and glow in the dark powder, water and lots of other things. The problem we are having is that using audio to create the waves leaves us with a limit to output relative to the power of the magnet in the speaker. If we had a variable power supply, we could use my miriad motors and various materials to create a physically driven diaphragm system with different sizes and resonant frequency ranges, and switch between them to create more powerful displays of the standing wave on, a larger surface with more material, to make the 3 dimansional wave more clear for his photography. Power supplies like yours would make our universe wide open for possibilities to create and capture. Thank you for reading my run on description and giving it any consideration.

    Would love to utilize this power supply to expand my ever-growing Christmas light display. I use many different types of displays, and this would greatly help make some of my ideas realistic, as everything is controlled via a Micrologix 1000 PLC. I could definitely get creative with that bad boy, and would even send you videos of the finished product!

    I want to use this bench PSU for a project which I am working on currently. This project is about using the Peltier to produce cool air. This air will be used to reduce the heat in a certain area.

     

     

     

    To get the desired cool temperature, a series of Peltier is needed. To power up these Peltier and to test the performance of these Peltier, a good PSU is required. Currently, I am powering one set of the Peltier using the normal power supply. And I am limited to test one Peltier at a time. I believe by using the this Tenma PSU; I will be able to test 3 sets of Peltier at one go.

    Expensive power supplies incorporate a data logger or can interface with one, so I'd like to see this power supply used as a data logger too. This could be a nice DIY project that mods the power supply to track and store Voltage, Current, Power consumption readings; I can see it implemented in different ways:

    • Adding a cheap microcontroller to the PSU that can log data into a Micro SD card or even USB flash drive, it can even incorporate a cheap LCD.
    • An all-in-one solution with touch screen (e.g. with an RPi Zero) that shows realtime information, graphs and allows for exporting data.
    • A wi-fi mod only solution with a web server that allows for the same options.
    • And my favorite take is a Bluetooth mod that can send the data to a cellphone app or to other systems like an RPi with a touch screen.
    • Or honestly any other possibility. E.g. the ESP32 could potentially be a good mod as a web server can be implemented over Wi-Fi and also the Bluetooth approach at the same time.

    I would hook up one terminal of the power supply to a 555 timer (set up for oscillating). One of the resistors in the 555 timer schematic would be a voltage controlled resistor. One of the other channels of the power supply would be connected to this voltage controlled resistor to vary the duty cycle of the oscillator. The last channel on the supply, could use it as a DC offset.

     

    Hooked up to a strobe light and then you have an instant dance party at the office! Definitely not overkill image

    Good power supply !! You can use the power supply for a powerful laser cutter like a CNC laser. If you don't like it, you can always make a fried egg using the power supply to heat the pan. XD

    In our laboratory we have a setup, where we can rotate a sample with attached probe inside huge electromagnet. The sample is turned using stepper motors (connected with non-magnetic turning table using system of belts), that are controlled by dedicated control device (that provide also absolute positioning and PC interface). Unfortunately steper drivers involved in the device are PWM controllers, and the noise generated by this switching caused interference with precise measurement setup (involving lock-in amplifiers). In order to continue measurements we decided to build an improvised non-switching stepper driver.

    This involves:

    1. Two variable high-end power supplies (acting as voltage controlled voltage sources)

    2. NI-USB measurement card, which together with PC software provides an interface between original controller and analog control inputs of power supplies

    3. Original stepper motor controller with switching-mode stepper drivers disconnected

     

    For test purposes we used an MSO as a signal generator to drive power supplies.

     

    Is it over-engineered and over-complicated? YES

    Is it over-rated? YES

    Does it work? YES

     

    So everything is OK. But we are pretending to get a title for making the most overrated and most over-sized stepper motor controller image

     

    Here is a video presenting the proof-of-concept using the MSO.
