imageThis year,  instead of Arduino Day, Arduino will be celebrating an entire week of Arduino from March 21st till March 26th.   To celebrate Arduino week, we will be launching a Better World with Arduino Competition where we challenge you to build a projects that makes a positive impact on the world.  At the end of the week we will have the first part of a 3 part workshop,  Better World with Arduino Workshop: Part 1: Getting Started (Win a Nicla Sense ME Board!), to help inspire you to do projects that make a positive impact on the world.   We also encourage you to submit your ideas, regardless of what board you use, on how you would use Arduino to make a better world.  We'll follow this up with another workshop that demonstrates a real world application of the Nicla ME board, Better World with Arduino Workshop: Part 2: Nicla Sense ME, Real World Application (Win a Nano Sense 33!, and invite members to share their better world in Better World with Arduino Workshop: Part 3: Inspiring Projects (Win a Hardcover Book!)  Throughout these activities Clem Mayers from element14 presents will be releasing "Arduino Bytes" video segments that will broaden your understanding of the Arduino platform. 

There will also be multiple giveaways throughout the next few months.    From now until the end of April,  share your "Better World with Arduino" project proposal for a chance to win a free board in Arduino Week 2022: How Would You Make a Better World with Arduino? (Win an Arduino Board of Your Choice!). Or, if your project involves the Nicla Sense ME board,  comment below with your Better World with Arduino project proposal for a chance to win an Arduino Nicla Sense ME boards.   We will be giving away a limited number of Nicla Sense ME boards but you are free to use the comments below to share any inspiring projects using any Arduino board of your choice.  Each workshop has a giveaway for contributing to the Better World discussion.     

The most inspiring Better World project will win a Braccio Robotic Arm TinkerKit, an edge control board,  and a $400 shopping cart.   3 first place winners will receive a a Arduino Edge Controller board and a $200 shopping cart.   We will also be gathering your stories and inspiring projects to release a "Better World with Arduino" hardcover book.

The goal of this competition is to do something that leaves a positive impact on the world and there is no better platform for rapid prototyping than the Arduino platform.   Projects can involve anything that you think will make a positive impact on the world such as robotics, predictive maintenance, disaster recovery, AI, TinyML, environmental monitoring, smart cities, sustainability, upcycling, accessibility, and anything you can think of.    Be sure to share story of how you would make the world better with your project so you can inspire others to build a better world using Arduino.  The week of Arduino Day is positive week and we want to collect as much positivity as possible during this contest so we can take that positivity and give it back to the world!

Here are some ideas from our members to get you started:

Arduino week is an event that spreads happiness but this year is special for everyone, we have gone from being aware of not getting sick from COVID-19 to fearing "war".

As a father of a family there is something that worries me and that does not let me sleep these days: How could we help the people of Ukraine?

The Arduino Nicla Sense ME board can be used to build many solutions that help improve the living conditions of the people of Ukraine, it could help to classify different types of explosions, air quality patterns, monitor habitability of bomb shelters, underground orientation with dead reckoning.

This looks a very nice board. Sadly at £50 I think it is too expensive for me. Can we use Nano 33 or MKR boards instead as I already have these?Not entirely sure what I might do, maybe use the motion sensor on a two legged walking robot or maybe on one of these four legged dog like platforms.

I think that this would make a great machine controller.  I have a client that builds animatronic displays (Halloween Props).  I am currently working on a project for him to directly control elements of these displays by using realtime motions of an hidden actor(s) as opposed to prerecorded sequences.  I could easily see that the Nicla Sense ME board would make an excellent controller for this application, as well as many other forms of machine (robot) control.

The Nicla Sense ME board looks great. I would love to try the connection with my Arduino MKR Vidor 4000 and also adapt my environmental monitor to that board, make it portable, reduce power consumption and also monitor physical activity. 

Training a machine learning model well takes a lot of time. I don't know OpenML, but if I have done some projects with Edge Impulse, it will be a good opportunity to learn about OpenML.

About Project14
 Directions

Every month you'll have a new poll where you'll get to decide an upcoming project competition, based on your interests, that will take place a couple of months in advance. Themes are broad in scope so that everyone can participate regardless of skill set.

 

What are Monthly Themes?

  • Every month (around the 14th of each month) a new theme will be posted on Project14.
  • Submit your ideas (proposals) for your projects to get feedback from the rest of the community.
  • Submit a project entry in the Theme space once you start working on it.

 

What are Monthly Theme Polls?

  • Every month (around the 14th of each month) there is a project theme poll.
  • Vote on which project competition you want to see for the following upcoming theme.
    • The themes voted on during the previous poll decided the upcoming theme.
    • If you submit an idea for a theme that is not used then it can still be used in a future poll.
  • Themes comments and ideas from the comments section of the project theme poll.

Step 1: Log in or register on element14, it's easy and free.

Step 3: Submit a blog post of your progress on your project by the end of the month.  You are free to submit as many blog entries as you like until the beginning of the next theme.

    Exercise is the great killer of humans. Naps and procrastination prolongs life.

  • I would like to use the Arduino Nano 33 Sense board to help in performing physical exercises.

    Very often it happens to get indoors, lying on the floor to do abdominals or exercises for the legs or arms and, after having done a couple of them in the correct way, you start to do them a little too much ... hasty !!
    In particular, using the motion sensors of the board I could monitor the quality of the exercises done by the user and if these are done incorrectly, it signals the user to repeat them.
    For the classification of exercise carried out correctly, I would use artificial intelligence techniques, for example the help of Edge Impulse! I think a fun, useful and didactically interesting project could come out.

  • I have several Arduino projects in the works, but due lack of availability of Arduinos like the Nano RP2040, I am forced to focus on a project that uses a plain old Nano. This project will be a complete sound synthesis system where the Nano is interfaced to a programmable sound generator (PSG) chip. The custom PCB I am designing for the system will include an audio amplifier as well as the PSG and Nano. It may not have an earth shattering positive impact on the planet, but everybody likes music and it is fun to experiment with sound synthesis and it uses an Arduino I can obtain.

  • My proposal is that asset tracking for indoor application. The reason that I am thinking of this is because sometimes in university time, I tend to forget where I placed my food as it is in package and there is not so much space for storing, as some food like yogurt will turn bad if the environment is too damp. I would to find it in the indoor space ,make sure it will not expire without consumption and results in wastage.

    By using its on board BHI260AP AI smart sensor with integrated IMU as it can use in pedestrian dead reckoning indoor and the BMP390 high performance barometric pressure sensor for detecting the small change in altitude. In addition, the BME688 AI sensor could be used for monitoring the humidity in the environment and informs me if it is rotten using the BME AI studio to train an AI model.

    I will attach the board with the lithium battery to power it, and place it into the food that I would like to track on since I would like it to operate in low power and activate only when the food is rotten. I would like to test the performance of it and compare with the UWB application that done by other member project.

    Well, I am very hopeful with second part i.e. to monitor the ripening stage of the bananas but I am not sure about the first part, I guess I will have to do some calculations with fan speed and hole diameter to ensure that the amount of air thrown out is equal to or more than the rate of ethylene production.

    Anyways human nose is way better than any device.Grin
