imageThis year,  instead of Arduino Day, Arduino will be celebrating an entire week of Arduino from March 21st till March 26th.   To celebrate Arduino week, we will be launching a Better World with Arduino Competition where we challenge you to build a projects that makes a positive impact on the world.  At the end of the week we will have the first part of a 3 part workshop,  Better World with Arduino Workshop: Part 1: Getting Started (Win a Nicla Sense ME Board!), to help inspire you to do projects that make a positive impact on the world.   We also encourage you to submit your ideas, regardless of what board you use, on how you would use Arduino to make a better world.  We'll follow this up with another workshop that demonstrates a real world application of the Nicla ME board, Better World with Arduino Workshop: Part 2: Nicla Sense ME, Real World Application (Win a Nano Sense 33!, and invite members to share their better world in Better World with Arduino Workshop: Part 3: Inspiring Projects (Win a Hardcover Book!)  Throughout these activities Clem Mayers from element14 presents will be releasing "Arduino Bytes" video segments that will broaden your understanding of the Arduino platform. 

There will also be multiple giveaways throughout the next few months.    From now until the end of April,  share your "Better World with Arduino" project proposal for a chance to win a free board in Arduino Week 2022: How Would You Make a Better World with Arduino? (Win an Arduino Board of Your Choice!). Or, if your project involves the Nicla Sense ME board,  comment below with your Better World with Arduino project proposal for a chance to win an Arduino Nicla Sense ME boards.   We will be giving away a limited number of Nicla Sense ME boards but you are free to use the comments below to share any inspiring projects using any Arduino board of your choice.  Each workshop has a giveaway for contributing to the Better World discussion.

The goal of this competition is to do something that leaves a positive impact on the world and there is no better platform for rapid prototyping than the Arduino platform.   Projects can involve anything that you think will make a positive impact on the world such as robotics, predictive maintenance, disaster recovery, AI, TinyML, environmental monitoring, smart cities, sustainability, upcycling, accessibility, and anything you can think of.    Be sure to share story of how you would make the world better with your project so you can inspire others to build a better world using Arduino.  The week of Arduino Day is positive week and we want to collect as much positivity as possible during this contest so we can take that positivity and give it back to the world!

Here are some ideas from our members to get you started:

Arduino week is an event that spreads happiness but this year is special for everyone, we have gone from being aware of not getting sick from COVID-19 to fearing "war".

As a father of a family there is something that worries me and that does not let me sleep these days: How could we help the people of Ukraine?

The Arduino Nicla Sense ME board can be used to build many solutions that help improve the living conditions of the people of Ukraine, it could help to classify different types of explosions, air quality patterns, monitor habitability of bomb shelters, underground orientation with dead reckoning.

This looks a very nice board. Sadly at £50 I think it is too expensive for me. Can we use Nano 33 or MKR boards instead as I already have these?Not entirely sure what I might do, maybe use the motion sensor on a two legged walking robot or maybe on one of these four legged dog like platforms.

I think that this would make a great machine controller.  I have a client that builds animatronic displays (Halloween Props).  I am currently working on a project for him to directly control elements of these displays by using realtime motions of an hidden actor(s) as opposed to prerecorded sequences.  I could easily see that the Nicla Sense ME board would make an excellent controller for this application, as well as many other forms of machine (robot) control.

The Nicla Sense ME board looks great. I would love to try the connection with my Arduino MKR Vidor 4000 and also adapt my environmental monitor to that board, make it portable, reduce power consumption and also monitor physical activity. 

Training a machine learning model well takes a lot of time. I don't know OpenML, but if I have done some projects with Edge Impulse, it will be a good opportunity to learn about OpenML.

About Project14
Directions

Every month you'll have a new poll where you'll get to decide an upcoming project competition, based on your interests, that will take place a couple of months in advance. Themes are broad in scope so that everyone can participate regardless of skill set.

 

What are Monthly Themes?

  • Every month (around the 14th of each month) a new theme will be posted on Project14.
  • Submit your ideas (proposals) for your projects to get feedback from the rest of the community.
  • Submit a project entry in the Theme space once you start working on it.

 

What are Monthly Theme Polls?

  • Every month (around the 14th of each month) there is a project theme poll.
  • Vote on which project competition you want to see for the following upcoming theme.
    • The themes voted on during the previous poll decided the upcoming theme.
    • If you submit an idea for a theme that is not used then it can still be used in a future poll.
  • Themes comments and ideas from the comments section of the project theme poll.

    I bought some bananas four days ago and I forgot to eat them. I didn't realize they were getting ripened with time by just looking at them. When I touched them that's when i knew that they are not edible any more. Now I am forced to think, how many fruits go to waste due to such negligenceThinking? Maybe I would have eaten them if I had realized earlier that they getting over ripen or maybe I could even delay its ripening.

    There is a gene in fruits that triggers ripening. When the fruits start to ripe they release ethylene gas. If this ethylene gas is removed, its ripening can be delayed. And we can even monitor the ripening stage of the fruit by measuring the amount of the ethylene gas.

    So, my project consists of two parts: (1) Delaying ripening of the fruit and (2) Monitoring its ripening stage.

    For this I can use the Nicla Sense ME board because it has the BME688 gas sensor which can measure the levels of VOC(volatile organic compounds) present in its environment.

    First part of my project is to delay the ripening of the fruit. For this I will be measuring the amount of VOC (i.e. ethylene) present in the air and maintaining it below a certain limit by using a exhaust fan. The whole system will be inside a sealed container in which there will be a hole to get fresh air in and another hole to suck out the ethylene using the fan. The sense board will be continuously measuring the VOC levels inside the container. If the level rises above a threshold limit, then a signal will be sent to the exhaust fan which will suck out the air along with ethylene till the level again goes below the threshold.

    The second part is to monitor the ripening stage of the fruit. For this I will be using ML. Each fruit has its particular ethylene vs time profile. It is basically a graph between amount of ethylene released vs time (or ripening stage). The Nicla Sense board will be continuously taking readings for VOC levels. After a certain number of readings, the readings will be compared against the already loaded ethylene profile and the ripening stage will be determined. There will  be an LCD display which will show the ripening stage on it.

    A switch will be used to toggle between the first and the second part of the project.

    I think it will make a positive impact on the world in the way that if we are aware of the quality of the fruits, we will eat those fruits first which are going to overripe soon. This way fruits will not get wasted. I am planning to use banana for this project as it releases moderate amounts of ethylene. This project can be used on other fruits (like apple, pear etc.) also by loading their particular ethylene profiles.

    Recently, I developed an AI-driven budget-friendly device with the Arduino MKR GSM 1400 to collect water quality data from various water resources in the field over GPRS to train a neural network model (TinyML) and forecast water pollution levels based on oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), and turbidity measurements.

    The device also transmits the prediction (detection) result via SMS.

    I thought it would be an interesting entry to this contest. So, I published a blog post about it:

    I would like to carry out a project for the control of air quality in school classrooms or, in general, in a closed work environment. The Nicla Sense ME board Arduino seems to me the ideal choice as it does not require many other additional components and has a large number of sensors that can be used for an analysis of air quality, from the feeling of well-being (temperature and humidity) to presence of CO2.

    For this Project14, the project I propose on doing is a vegetable and goods quality detection device that you can add to your wet goods compartment or refrigerator. Usually the main reason for good spoiling is due to the difficulty of tracking what goods are going to spoil soon which is caused by having too much to do at home such as chores or work and inconsistency of tracking which food was bought and placed into storage especially if you have more people in your home constantly taking and returning food in and out your cabinets and fridge.

    If given the opportunity, I’d like to develop this device using the Nicla Sense ME board which has a BME688 to detect rotting food odor and the BHI260AP to check if doors are opened. It’s BLE capabilities will allow to connect to a mobile app that can quickly record what you bought and their expiration date and create alerts when date gets closer and if rotting occurs and number of times compartments were opened on a given time.

    Why I think this device can make a better world is because this can serve as an example that can inspire people to do more with lessening food loss to spoilage. With a rising global population and limited resources, I hope that my project can create awareness on optimizing food management from farm to table rather than to trash. Thank you
