Contest Details:

The fourth annual Holiday Special 20 is an open-ended holiday project competition that challenges you to make a project that reflects what the holidays mean to you.  2020 has been a sobering year for most,  we are hoping this year's holiday project competition brings a familiar sense of joy and normality to the holiday season, and that technology can help bridge the distance between friends and family, during a time of the year that has become synonymous with gathering around friends and family.

image

p>

So, we’re asking members to spread mirth and merry to the world through projects that use music, LED Displays, Nixie Pixels, Strobe Lights, Fog Machines, or anything else that puts you into a celebratory mood. If the past year has put you in a reflective mood, your project can be a thoughtful project with others in mind, such as a project inspired by gifts, food, or cards exchanged during the holidays.  Or you could focus on electronic ways of sending the warmest wishes to friends and family, such as an electronic greetings card, a way to automatically email or use RF transmission to link up via video etc.  It can also be a fun project that's made in the holiday spirit such as a snow globe that will warn you of inclement weather conditions, voice-activated ornaments, jazzed up holiday cards, LED decorations - anything that means the holidays to you.  Your project can be related to Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or Festivus for the rest of us related!  It can even be a Star Wars project, if you only believe in the Force. The only thing that we ask is that your holiday project shows heart!

The project that shows the most heart wins a tool kit (~ $500 value) that includes a handheld oscilloscope, a usb soldering iron, a bench power supply, wire strippers, along with a $400 shopping cart plus a $100 gift to give to another member for their project.  Three first place winners will receive will receive a tool kit bundle (~value of $300 value) along with a $200 shopping cart and a $100 shopping cart to give to another member for their projects.  All Gift to Gives can be given to any member’s that the winners think are deserving but did not win.

Random Acts of Kindness Day

Every year since this has started we have tried to do something around a Random Acts of Kindness.   This usually involves the Winners picking Gifts to Give to members on Valentine's Day.   Last year, we sent out a bunch of free boards to members.   We'd like to do something similar with everything that's gone on in the past year.  This year we'll be announcing the the Gift to Gives on February 17th, 2021 which just so happens to be Random Acts of Kindness Day

Also,  check out the Engineer and Maker’s Wish List in the Members area and share your product Wishlist and look for element14 presents product giveaways to collect more tools to help deck out your bench! Competition Begins December 1 and ends on January 14th

All Gift to Gives can be given to any member that submitted a project in either Holiday Special 20 or the Making Time competition which will be happening at the same time.  Throughout the month we'll have holiday round ups of previous projects submitted during previous Holiday Special competitions!  You can use those as inspiration for submitting a Holiday project that is unique to you.  Also,  check out our  elf14 presents - The Engineer and Maker's Wish List 2020 in the Members area and share your product Wishlist and find links to element14 presents product giveaways to collect more tools to help deck out your bench!

Your project will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Follow the Steps - Did you show the steps it took you to complete the project (text, video, or images) and did you include documentation such as schematics?
  • Submit Video Proof - Did you post video proof of you project?
  • Stick to the Theme - How well did your project stick to the theme (any holiday project) of the competition?
  • Demonstrate Originality - Was your project your original?  Did you come up with a clever name for their project?

Stay safe and take care of yourself.  It does not matter if you celebrate Christmas, the end of the year is a time to celebrate making it through another year, and the promise of hope for a better year in 2021.  This is an inclusive project competition and more than ever the world has been through so much together.  Let's bring joy and familiar delight with the projects that we do on the community this year, as we hope for a better tomorrow.  If there is a holiday project other than a Christmas Project that you want to celebrate feel free to enter that into the holiday contest.

Your Chance to Win

Come Up With a Clever Name
Stick to the Theme
  • A clever name can make your project memorable.
  • The right name can distinguish your project from others and help create buzz around your project.
  • This project is your baby! Part of the fun of bringing something new into the world is coming up with a name.
  • If you have an idea for a project that doesn't fit the current theme then submit your idea in the comments section of the monthly poll.
Be Original
Submit Video Proof
  • Providing the steps you took to complete your project (text, video, or images) and providing video proof should be sufficient in most cases.
  • If your project introduces something new or something that is not commercially available or affordable then that counts!
  • If it doesn't work that's fine, this program is more about the journey than the end product.
  • A short video is all that is required but you can shoot as much video as you like.
  • You are encouraged to be creative and have as much fun as possible!

I look forward to your holiday music elf, your projects are always good.

I'm able to find some time this weekend to put together a prototype for this year's project. It wont be pretty, but I hope to share and bring a smile to someone's face.

I think this year might be the first time I actually managed to get a holiday-based project done by the holiday it was meant for. My A Lego Christmas game wouldn't have been quite the same if I hadn't done it by the 25th.

hugohu  Sorry to hear about your screen.  I can really relate to the angry cry at the end.  I envision Angry Wookie, like Chewbacca.
