Your Project Can Involve Anything that Uses or Alters Time!

 

The theme this month is Making Time and it is inspired by a suggestion from dwinhold , as well as, a suggestion from Workshopshed .    You can do clock making projects such as you would do with a microcontroller, LED, or whatever you come up with.  Or, you could do any project that uses or alters time such as a project involving egg timers, photographic timers, clocks, calendars, and delay lines.  This competition is a good opportunity to think about time, and the various ways we use technology we use to not only mark, but help manipulate time. For example, you could do anything from a time delay for photography, an egg timer for the kitchen, to a clock with intelligence such as a smart alarm project with modern features such as voice assistance, streaming music, video, camera, an SBC, weather alerts, news alerts, moon phases, appointments from your phone, oled or LED screen.  Another idea, would be to create a smart wristwatch.

Self-adjusting clock with e-display by kk99

kk99 set out to make a self-adjusting clock, making it work with CET time zone and supporting daylight savings. For the source of time, he used a GPS signal received from a NEO-7M module that had a serial port, a 2.9 inch module with e-ink display, and connected all this to an Arduino Nano. This is a really interesting application of e-ink technology that uses a low-powered Arduino and automatically updates using smart technology.  He provides schematics and source code which can be used to expand this project even further!

This was the first Project14 from guycarver and it was a definite winner.  If you've ever been annoyed by the glowing LED from traditional alarm clock,  this smart alarm clock uses an IR Temperature sensor as the trigger for the display. Simply wave your hand and it will turn on when you want to see the time at night. He came up with this solution to prevent the light from keeping him up at night and provides source code at https://github.com/GuyCarver/raspi/tree/master/projects/clock !

balearicdynamics found an incredibly nice alarm clock from the past century and upcycled it into a smart alarm. Alex is a digital alarm clock, dating back to 1978.  It was only partially working and therefore it could be had on the cheap.

The hands are independently controlled with 2 stepper motors that also have a slotted disk which allows them to "home" and hence know their start position.

About Project14
Directions

Every month you'll have a new poll where you'll get to decide an upcoming project competition, based on your interests, that will take place a couple of months in advance. Themes are broad in scope so that everyone can participate regardless of skill set.

 

What are Monthly Themes?

  • Every month (around the 14th of each month) a new theme will be posted on Project14.
  • Submit your ideas (proposals) for your projects to get feedback from the rest of the community.
  • Submit a project entry in the Theme space once you start working on it.

 

What are Monthly Theme Polls?

  • Every month (around the 14th of each month) there is a project theme poll.
  • Vote on which project competition you want to see for the following upcoming theme.
    • The themes voted on during the previous poll decided the upcoming theme.
    • If you submit an idea for a theme that is not used then it can still be used in a future poll.
  • Themes comments and ideas from the comments section of the project theme poll.

    Or, perhaps, do it the other way round. Keep the mechanical sundial and have a ring of LEDs shining on it to simulate the sun moving.

    alainlavanchy Wow, sounds like a great idea!  I have always loved Sun Dials and other methods of manually tracking the sun.  Depending on how "tech" you want to get you could even come with a total simulation type project so you could have a Sun Dial inside a building.  Wonder if you could take the hour tracking mechanism of an analog clock, mount it at the base of the sun dial needle with the needle being a pipe allowing for a wire to pass up and over as an arc with a directional LED suspended/connected to the wire to act as a sun simulation and moving around/above the sun dial like the actual sun.  Not sure if I am making sense.  :-)

    Hi Jon, cool input. I was just thinking if I probably could do both

     

    button A -> simulate the sun

    button B -> show the current time when the sun is shining.

    Sounds like an interesting project. Not so good in the winter when there isn't much sunshine, or even daylight. Maybe you could use moonlight.

    A digital pocket sundial

    The easy way a sundial shows time fascinates me. Some time ago I came across an old pocket sundial like the following one:

     

    An ancient pocket sundial watch.

    I thought about creating a digital sundial. Using 12 LDR-sensors and a display to show the calculated hour. As you have to point the sundial towards south the micro:bit is my preferred microcomputer, as it has a built-in compass.

     

    Today it's cloudy and raining, so no time at all :-)

    I was thinking that I might not take part in this challenge as I want to get stuck into a Christmas themed project, but then I thought, maybe I could make a Christmas themed clock thingy. Or maybe I'll just stick to some LED Christmas thingy. Only time will tell.

    This should be an interesting Project14!

     

    Now I wish I would have applied to Roadtest for the new RPi Camera.  I think it would be interesting to setup a RPi with new Camera that takes expected Sunrise, Solar noon and Sundown and uses that to Photograph daily!

     

    Moon photos would be interesting as well.  Ah well, I have neither the latest RPi nor the latest camera so perhaps someone more up to date with the hardware might be interested.  :-)

    My clock uses no power whatsoever and is correct twice a day. It's a broken one.
