What’s it about and how can it help me?

The Power Management Bus (PMBus)  is an open standard power-management protocol that allows for the communication needed for configuration, control, and monitoring of all aspects of the power supply system between the ICs.   This flexible and highly versatile standard allows for communication between devices based on both analog and digital technologies, and provides true interoperability, reducing design complexity and shortening time to market for power system designers.  who is a Global Technical Marketing Engineer with Avnet, will walk you through PMBus and how it can be used to fix problems with hardware design. For the higher power UltraZed SOM that was recently released by AVNET Chris decided that he wanted to support all the power modes of the Zynq UltraScale device. He also wanted to include PMBus communication capability for real time monitoring and control.

Power supply telemetry used to be a premium feature (read expensive) that was only designed into systems that absolutely needed it. As the technology has matured the cost of entry has come down, making the capabilities more attractive to a wider application base. We will review what power supply telemetry is, specifically using the PMBus industry standard, as well as go over example designs featuring the Ultra96-V2 and the UltraZed SOM platforms.

What You Will Learn In This Webinar:

  • What is PMBus
  • What capabilities are enabled using this interface
  • How this capability can potentially fix problems discovered later in the design

Chris Ammann, Global Technical Marketing Engineer, Avnet

Started my career designing equipment for telecom with a focus on power and harsh environments. Joined Avnet as a power specialist FAE, eventually moving on to a role with the Global team focused on power. I now support power and thermal design around all the Avnet designed products as well as work with manufacturers to create material that helps customers tailor power solutions to their end products.
