If you're a maker or an engineer who's interested in getting into FPGA, we're making it easier than ever to get started.  We're following up the Getting Started with Xilinx Development Tools webinar and the 3 part Xilinx Workshop: Getting to Know Vivado Series with Adam Taylor with a workshop that let's you use a board compatible with Vivado for your next project.The Arty S7 board features the new Xilinx Spartan-7 FPGA and is the latest member of the Arty FPGA development board family from Digilent. The Arty S7 board features new Xilinx Spartan-7 FPGA and is the latest member of the Arty family for Makers and Hobbyists.  This little dev board is something that we think you will be interested, especially if you've attended our previous Xillinx workshops. It hits a sweet spot of having a relatively low cost ($99 USD) and enough power and connectivity be very useful.

The Spartan-7 FPGA offers the most size, performance, and cost-conscious design engineered with the latest technologies from Xilinx and is fully compatible with Vivado Design Suite versions 2017.3 and newer. Putting this FPGA in the Arty form factor provides users with a wide variety of I/O and expansion options. Use the dual row ArduinoRegistered connectors to mount one of the hundreds of hardware compatible shields available, or use the Pmod ports with Digilent's pre-made Pmod IP blocks for a more streamlined design experience. Arty S7 was designed to be MicroBlaze ready and comes out of the box ready to use with the free Xilinx WebPack licensing with the Vivado Design Suite.

    Hey there!

            I'm very interested in attending this workshop, because I'm an innovator and roboticist who loves to innovate new things and robots. And this Arty S7 board has really awesome features that can give life to many of my project ideas. I've worked with some other Xilinx boards, but this board is something powerful when comparing the specs. I've designed a mini hexacopter and looking for a controller which is going to act as the brain of my small drone. And considering the specs of the  Arty S7 board, I found that this board will be best suited for my drone, since it have high processing speed, expected number of gpio pins etc,. This FPGA has a lot to do with robotic applications. It can process all the control systems algorithms like PID faster than any other boards. This the reason why in very much interested in joining this workshop.

    I'd been researching a quite since I read about this workshop and came across these useful links: RoadTest and FPGA essentials

    Thought to share these links here for anyone who's like me is trying to get started on FPGAs with theses boards.

     

    As far I've understood, Digilent Arty S7 is a great starter Evaluation Board featuring powerful Xilinx Spartan S7, here to make life supereasy, especially for prototyping and hobbyists minimizing the development time with added software. Though I'd love if it had also featured ethernet but then it's a starter board with Arduino/ChipKit connectors in place.

     

    I'd say that I'll make it worth if given this board.

    I'm interested in this new product line as our existing designs covers the spartan versions. Learning from this webinar can help me go thru the basics and understand how our design requirements especially for newer products can match to this product's capabilities and possibly use this device in the future.

    hugohu I was replying to your comment and agreeing that someone who thinks a Spartan-7 FPGA is an Arduino is unlikely to make the most of it. From you comments it seems that your have a realistic expectation of the board and what you can do with it. Sorry for any confusion!

    That is true.

     

    It's like, they say, "Free Diligent Zynq-7000".

     

    A Zynq7000? I don't have any experience at all in that. Would I maybe want to play with it? Yes. Will I do anything useful with it? No. Will it gather dust? Yes.

    I think that Rabidas didn't read the full description of the Arty-S7(Probably the 25 version, not 50). I think Rabidas might have mistaken this for a overkill Arduino...

     

    It's also more of a "don't bite off more than you can chew".

     

    It's the same thing as roadtests- if you aren't sure you can do it, then consider again. you should be certain or nearly certain it can be done.

     

    I'm new to FPGA actually, I know their very powerful and probably very hard, and I certainly wouldn't apply for a roadtest of a FPGA board since I'd be stuck in the wilderness, but for this, it doesn't seem as advanced as that Zynq-7000 thing, and there's also a workshop, so I'm hoping to get awarded one so I might be able to use a Zynq-9000 or something in the future.

     

    Fred, can you read my comment above and see if it might merit a board or if it is better in the hands of others? Thanks.

    hugohu I think that some people see "free" or "giving away" and jump in without even knowing what it is on offer. Please don't apply unless you genuinely plan to attend the webinars and learn how to use the Arty S7. Otherwise it will just collect dust in a drawer and you'll deprive someone else of the opportunity to do so.

     

    It's probably worth mentioning to those new to this that whilst FPGAs are really powerful, it's not an easy ride. Be prepared to work with something so unlike a microcontroller that you will have to cope with a huge shift in the way you're thinking. I remember when I started out johnbeetem described the learning curve as "climbing the cliffs of insanity" and he wasn't far off! Having said that I can genuinely recommend it. Just don't underestimate it!
