You can add a battery to make it work without a USB connection.
Using a battery adds its own set of problems, including one that can kill a Raspberry Pi.
1: You need to hold A and B buttons for 10 seconds to reset the device so you can reprogram it over USB
2: Connecting a CodeBug to a Raspberry Pi via the GPIO ports will kill the device if a battery is installed.

Connecting a Codebug to a Pi by GPIO and simultaneously powering Via USB killed a Pi, but I'm not sure that a battery powered codebug will damage a Pi, I would suspect it would be OK.
The USB powered codebug fed 5V into the Pi's 3V3 GPIO, a 3V CR2032 won't kill the Pi.
The CR2032 may be damged by this process.
