Introduce Yourselves!

bltsandwich1

The great part about E14 is that the community is great, and you can make some great connections. With that in mind it may help to introduce yourself to the group, and so I've thought up a couple questions that might aid in some of those connections.

  • Name and Locale?
  • Type of employment (Elementary, Secondary, Collegiate, Student, Enginering)?
  • What have you used the Rpi for (or what do you plan to use it for)?
  • What is your biggest goal you have for your Rpi, or what do you want to use it for, but might not have the skills for yet?

I figure I better be the one to start.

I'm John Moosemiller (but I guess you can already see that), and for now I'm living in the Chicago Area, but not for long.... I'll explain

Currently I am student and am a recent HS (Naperville North) grad. In the fall I'll be attending the University of Houston to study Chemical Engineering with a computer science minor. I am also the Co-Founder and Memeer of the Board of Project LEAD an Illinois Not-For-Profit Corporation. Project LEAD produces YouTube videos (many about the Raspberry Pi) and shares some of the coolest STEM news on the web. I'm also working (although only for a few moe days) at the University of Chicago in the Computation Institute.

I've used the Pi as a server, media center, and desktop (learning Python)

I'd love to use the Pi for more hardware interfacing (which is why I just placed a PiFace order). But Hardware + John + full-time job = no Harware interfacing.

I like to think I know my way around the pi pretty well, so if you have any questions feel free to ask! And if I don't know the answer I DEFINITELY know somebody that does.

    Nice to meet you John,

I am Mike Davis, the Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs at Wright College.  I was formerly the Associate Vice Chancellor for STEM at the City Colleges of Chicago, and a Chemistry Professor before that.

More than that, I am a science and engineering enthusiast.  I see it as my personal mission to leverage the resources of institutions like the City Colleges of Chicago to further STEM education and experiences for Chicago at large.  It is important to share with the community.

I am so happy that this community exists and that I can get some help with things.

    See you all soon!

    Mike

    Hi I'm David Morton,

I'm the Director of the Science Visualization Laboratory at Columbia College Chicago Science Math Dpt. I mainly work with undergraduates developing ways to convey scientific information in easy to understand terms. I also work with Chicago After School Matters STEM as an instructor and liaison as well as work on Scientists for Tomorrow, an NSF grant, bringing STEM to underserved communities in Chicago. We are always exploring ways to get young people involved in STEM related areas and I think the PI is going to serve as a great platform to develop modules for use in our programs.

We're looking at ways to build low cost, digital, personal planetariums that will be able to use Stellariium software. There has been some headway in getting it on the PI but so far nothing truly stable that could be deployed in low-income communities or developing nations.

We're also looking into developing a sequenced, modular robotics track for After School Matters.

The more I interact with the PI the more ideas come to mind image

Looking forward to hanging out and exploring what we can all do together with this unique bit of technology.

    Dave

Glad that you've joined element14 Community.  I'm intrigued by Stellariium as I've not heard of it before.  Looking at the website right now.  What aspects were unstable on the Pi?

    cheers,

    drew

I too am interested in Stellarium, because from the sound of it, it could be very promising (did you ever find a link Drew?).

David, You may look into the Laika platform... I may be getting one when they come to market (they were only for order on Kickstarter initially).

    Here's a link: http://www.project-laika.com/

Also worthy of note is the PiFace, which I can link you to (http://www.newark.com/piface/piface-digital/daughter-card-pi-face-expansion/dp/48W3976) and which Drew can tell you MUCH more about.

    Hope this helps...

    John

If I can get Ubuntu running on my BBB I think this will be a project of mine... could be especially cool if it could be completely mobile.

Hi I'm Steve Woods and I am currently working as a Teaching Assistant in the Computer Technology department of the Trafalgar School in Downton (near Salisbury, Wilts, UK)

Trafalgar School is a secondary school with 560 students who take traditional ICT lessons leading to GCSE. We are very keen to introduce the Raspberry Pi and Piface Digital into the curriculum and have already demonstrated a few python programs to parents and students at a recent Open Evening

Plan to adopt the Raspberry Pi in our after school computer club as well as teaching Python in classes.

This is great to hear! If you ever have any questions about how the Pi might be utilized this is certainly a great place to go! I also like to see the interest in Python as the primary interest.

With Python and the Raspberry Pi as focuses I'm currently writing an intro-to-Python repository on Github that should be nearing it's beta level soon. Once this is released we will be releasing a Raspberry Pi image that will streamline the process for installation. Right now you can try it out on any computer by using the link below.

Hope this helps, and let us know if you have any questions!

Got mine on (back) order and cant wait to tinker with it. It reminds me of the early 80s when we all had to make our own PC's. Fingers crossed it spawns a new generation of innovators... for my part i'll be happy reliving the past lol.
