Parallax Cyber:bot for Micro:bit Preview Webinar

24 Jan 2019

So, Parallax is collaborating with the National Integrated Cyber Education Research Center to create a cyber:bot using the BBC micro:bit and the Parallax Boe-Bot chassis.  Since this is using the micro:bit, MicroPython is used to program the bot in Python.   This will be a great educational tool to teach both programming and robotics.

On Jan 24, 2019 2:00 PM in Pacific Time (US and Canada) Parallax will hold a Webinar showing a preview of the cyber:bot.

Follow the link below if interested in the Webinar.

I'm not sure how I missed this Blog yesterday, so I missed this webinar. But they have now put the recorded version online at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95vQCDc4qJ0&feature=youtu.be so all was not…

Yes, it was a pretty good Webinar held by Ken Gracey from Parallax and Dr. Chuck Gardner and Tommy Gober from NICERC. The kit will be available to the general public in March and they will offer both a…

Regarding missing this, I noticed with some of my posts that they do not show up on the Recent list on the main element14 page and I am not sure why. So, unless you were looking for something specific…

    Jon,

I noticed about the broken links. I just do not know what I did that was different than links I have inserted in the past. I'll have to be more careful and see if I can sort out what I did wrong.

    Jon,

I am sure that there must be some reason. Maybe there are just too many posts to put them all up, but this one did seem odd as it appeared after the event mentioned.

Sorry, I just noticed they updated the links on their site to reflect the posting of the cyber:bot.

I noticed you had another post recently on the site and the link seems to be broken as well.  You might want to see how it is formatted.

As far as Parallax in other countries, there was a question in the Webinar where someone asked if they plan to go to New Zealand at some point. They seem to be looking into that. They do tend to cater to the education market mainly in the US, but I would image if there were a request to have them hold a training session in the UK they would certainly look into it.

I have to agree that the price of their bots are a bit expensive but they are a small fish in an huge MCU ocean and the fact that they seem to still stay alive is quite amazing. There are ton of products one can get at the cheap from  Shenzhen, but I tend to like to keep it a bit local if possible.  You get what you from Shenzhen though.

The Propeller is quite interesting in that it has multiple COGs (like cores) where processes can run in parallel being manged by time-slicing the access to each COG and the individual COGs running independently of each other.  I am not sure if they are exploiting this with the micro:bit interface, but it would provide some advantage especially when running with MicroPython from the micro:bit.

I find it all interesting though.

    Jon,

I'm not sure what happened with the link as this is the second one that didn't work. Still you have given a working link now.

I noticed that this was aimed at Schools and in the USA but the technology could be used anywhere. I did see that they were using the micro:bit to talk to the Propeller micro which I wasn't sure was worthwhile or not but they have a technology base that they wanted to exploit. The Boe Bots are a bit too expensive for me I preferred the 4 wheel drive mini robot FT-MC-003 from Feetechrc.com but they don't seem to make them anymore. Or they are not readily available in the UK anymore. Four continuous rotation servos, wheels, tyres and an aluminium chassis for about £15.00, hard to go wrong with this.
