NeoPixels: Building A Project From Scratch

Welcome back! Natasha here. :)

This is the eighth of 10 blog posts featuring each video in my series on animating LEDs with micro:bit and Make Code. If you've just stumbled upon this post, start from the beginning here.

Learn how to plan a NeoPixel project.

Assortment of NeoPixels

This video is a deep dive into creating projects with NeoPixel LEDs - what to buy, the different form factors that they come in, and how to put them together.

In this video, I define what a NeoPixel is (a brand name of WS2812B or similar LEDs), then share some common properties of all NeoPixels, and how they are addressed.

image

Then, I share some tips for how to connect NeoPixels to microcontrollers and show a brief overview of how to solder NeoPixels to create your own custom pixel arrangements.

image

Next, I share examples of the many types of NeoPixel strips, waterproofing options, circuit board pixels, and NeoPixel strings.

image

And finally, I show many examples of great NeoPixel builds from across the Maker Community. When you have a moment, check out the builds by these makers:

What will you make?

I hope this video inspires you to build a project beyond the example Light-Up Helmet project. What ideas do you have?

Thanks! Yes, aren't these spectacular? I'm most excited about the strings - so many possibilities!

Nice overview of the current LED offerings.

When LEDs first came out we had just low power red ones.

    Nice selection covered there.

Discrete through-hole NeoPixels may be worth a mention, especially for those wanting to make a custom PCB or stripboard layout but not wanting to attempt SMD. Also potential for dipping into cast resin moulds for creating custom shapes.

I'm quite interested in seeing what people have managed to come up with mounting arrangements. Has there ben any interesting 3D printing of clips, support brackets, channels, etc. going on to give a seamless appearance once installed on the bicycle ?
