Introducing the 'Fundamentals of Single Pair Ethernet' eBook

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) ecosystem solves many manufacturing challenges. The IIoT enables the interconnection of equipment on the factory floor, instruments, sensors, and other networked devices for the purposes of monitoring, collecting, and exchanging data. In addition to identifying maintenance issues, data can be analyzed to identify trends. Reliable connectivity is vital for the implementation of IIoT solutions.

In the past, industrial automation relied on Fieldbus-type connections in proprietary systems. The manufacturer-specific variations present in these systems made them incompatible and noninteroperable with third party systems. With the rise of Information Technology (IT), Ethernet became a widespread standard for wired connectivity, being the dominant connection type in networks and data centers. Ethernet has also been adopted for industry, with applications such as Industrial Ethernet, which require low latency and determinism.

Current networks use 2-pair or 4-pair cables and connectors; however, this conventional infrastructure can be cumbersome and expensive for fieldconnected sensors and actuators. Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) enables the integration of devices at the field level. Typically, field devices connect to a higher control level through a Fieldbus system, rather than connecting directly to the Ethernet network. SPE closes this gap and provides real-time communication down to the field level. Single Pair Ethernet is an evolution that provides the benefits of Ethernet connectivity in a simplified, lightweight infrastructure that makes the mass deployment of the IIoT possible.

This ebook discusses connectivity in IIoT, the basics of SPE technology, the new IEC 63171-7 standard, and various other cable and connector standards. It also covers the concept of Power over Data Lines (PoDL), architectures, and applications of SPE in various fields
