Should Handheld multimeters have color LCD displays?

As I am waiting for my OWON HDS242 to come in the mail, I thought I might ask other members how they feel about a handheld multimeter having a power hungry color LCD display.

The product webpage suggests a battery life of 3-6 hours. https://www.owon.com.hk/products_owon_hds200_series_digital_oscilloscope 

Even more interesting/exciting is the batteries can be recharged with a USB-C cable.

Based on Kerry Wong's teardown: http://www.kerrywong.com/2021/09/18/teardown-of-an-owon-hds272s-3-in-1-handheld-oscilloscope-dmm-awg-compared-with-hantek-2d72/ the multimeter functionality is galvanically isolated from the usb connector.

What do you think?

First time trying the poll feature, hopefully I didn't goof it!

Based on Kerry's notes the meter also has the bones of a real oscilloscope (ADC, FPGA, Sample memory, etc..) How performant is oscilloscope it? I don't know yet.... But I am intrigued!

Update: The scopemeter arrived!

Indoors the color LCD looks awesome! For me my multimeter ends up either sitting flat on my desk on in my lap and in both those cases the display is 10x easier to read than a segment LCD without a backlight.

Outdoors with direct sunlight the segment LCD is easier to read than the color LCD.

In the shade outdoors, I think both display technologies are equally legible.

    My Keysight is super waterproof, so it is a bit of an exercise to get at the battery. Fortunately its battery lasts a long time. It does raise the question, Should a waterproof meter use a color display?

    Not exactly color LCD, but different! : ) I recently bought a multimeter with OLED display. Mainly because it was cheap for the features!

    It's model PCE-ODM 10 from the dodgiest looking website ever - even after ordering, I still wasn't convinced that I had not fallen for a scam, but surprisingly it was delivered swiftly. It is a rebadged CEM DT-9968 (but the CEM specification is incorrect; it states that the granularity is 100mV for instance, but I wouldn't have bought it if it was!). 

    It seems fine, usable, but the menu system is pretty bad, I can't even figure out how to set the time correctly, and whoever coded the software didn't do a good job handling user input versus display update.

    But, as long as I stick to normal measurements, it seems fine. It also came with a load of accessories (even an AC current clamp! and case) so I can't complain for the price.

    The display is really nice, readable from all angles and from a distance, indoors (where I will be using it). Even under desk lighting it is readable. However, the plastic panel over it is curved, which doesn't help with taking photos of it, there will be some discoloration due to polarization (the photo above shows it on the battery indicator, and the digits 2 and 3 at the bottom). Also, it flickers at video frame rates (fine for very short videos perhaps).

    There's a Bluetooth version too, but I don't see the point, it's not going to be a meter I'm going to use for (say) logging functions, due to the menu being not that great.

    Also, I wish the firmware would display the meter range (it uses the decimal place to imply it, versus just displaying the max value like normal Fluke, Keysight meters, etc), and I really don't like that.

    It is easier to see the display on your soldering iron versus your multimeter!

    scottiebabe , have you been able to talk (scpi) with the oscilloscope? It's not coming up as a test device, has no USB serial interface and LabVIEW doesn't know how to connect to it.

    I have a manual for the instructions, but could not locate a connection manual. My google-fu hasn't gotten me further yet.

    Someone on the eevblog posted a sample python script using pyusb, that is what I have been using. All credit to the forum author not me!

    Using pyusb is surprising simple! I presume labview might let you do the same thing quite easily too

    I believe it is 0x01 and 0x81

    My scopemeter has the same vid/pid as my f-gen (which I believe is the same vid/pid as yours) so in pyusb I had to add one more search parameter to ensure I was talking to the right thing!
