We did some site maintenance

cstanton
cstanton over 2 years ago

As announced here:  Site Maintenance: 13th Jan 2023

Let me know here if you have any problems this weekend - since weekends are usually when we see the site go down the most.

Thanks for your patience.

Edit:

We're observing that there are regular problems approximately every 12 hours, such as at 9:30AM GMT each day the site is unresponsive. The development team and server admins are aware, fortunately the site comes back up without intervention, but we don't want it to happen at all.

Further edit:

Thanks to the fixes that went in on Friday, we've been able to identify what's contributing to the 12-hour frequency problems - the development team are implementing security measures to prevent it.

It's been well behaved for the past couple of days, which feels great. Really awesome work by the team.

Overall, the weekend saw much improved performance. Quite useable.

Well, I read a book - does that count? And I am just heading out to play softball in a dome. So far I've just seen the one temporary stall - significantly better than previous weekends.

I haven't been on that much this weekend, but it seems a bit better.

So far I just had one episode where things stalled and I got those little blue popups for a few minutes.

Unfortunately it's not going that well for me.
Approx 1 minute from clicking the link in the notification to get the first message up onb this thread.
And then about another minute before all the messages were up.
This is fairly typical 9-10 am behaviour except that during the week the browser often times out before getting anything.
I don't have problems with other websites.
(Using Firefox, Windows 10, both up to date.)

Then I couldn't send the reply - no reply button visible.

Tried to refresh page an got a

    ..........js box.

Took three more close completely and re-start from notification link attempts to get a full page with working reply box.

Yeah, I'm getting inconsistent results. Sometimes it's long waits before first byte ...

Other times, partial loads but comments don't load/comment box doesn't work.

Force refresh sometimes brings it back, sometimes does not. Haven't seen a Gateway Error yet, but I haven't had much time to spend on the site.

Occasionally, it manages to work as expected and be fast ... but that's probably still a way off as I'm guessing the back-end might still be chugging away.

    All times GMT.

    • On my iPad: at 9:49 clicked on the link in the notification and, eventually, the browser page responded with a cannot open page because server stopped responding.
    • On my iPad: just after that, tried from a separate tab which was open on the home page; the thread opened ok and I tried typing this response but realise I couldn’t because the editor controls were missing, including the submit button
    • On my iPhone: tried accessing the email link which resulted in a partially loaded page - no real content at all.
    • On my iMac: booted this up (around 9:56 now) and clicked the notification link.  Page eventually opened after 2 minutes or so.  Also tried from the home page, and the page eventually opened after a couple of minutes.
    • On my iMac: clicked on the reply button and an editor box opened with controls but pretty much straightaway the blue “An error occurred…” box started opening.  3 times in all.
    • On my iMac: clicked refresh and the main message plus Top Replies were refreshed, but nothing else except the 3 grey dots.  10:03 by this time.  Took around 2 mins to display the responses.
    • On my iMac: clicked on the “Reply” button and the editor box loaded without controls or submit button.  This was on the page opened by clicking the email notification.
    • On my iMac: after a minute or so, the editor control appeared.

At 10:22 on my iPad, clicking reply results in a fully loaded editor control.

I've not used the site as much, my (so far OK) experience is on Friday, and late Saturday/very early Sunday morning UK time. Anyone know how we can check what server we are connected to? Just in case it is an issue with some servers and not others.

So far, no errors seen here since the site maintenance, although the site does appear to be a lot quieter than usual this weekend. Perhaps members are busy down at the local gym working off their New Year's resolutions. Slight smile
