    I'm going to buy a waveform generator and thinking about a new soldering iron. My actual soldering iron is still working but it's somewhat limited in power. I'm planning to still use it, but as secondary iron for field use.

    I have an instrument wish list that I use as reference to keep track what I need the most. That's mainly to avoid buying stuff I don't need and to avoid wasting money. Unfortunately, after the function generator and the soldering iron prices in my list start to go up, so I have to keep my need for new shiny instruments under control Slight smile

  • After many years playing with wireless technologies, such as sub GHz ISM, Bluetooth, WiFi, GSM/GPRS/LTE/4G, NFC etc. I have now recently switched back to communication technologies (and protocols) over wire.

    We tend to take protocols like RS485, RS232 & even Ethernet (TCP/UDP) for granted but I am discovering other options like narrowband and broadband powerline communication technology (including G3-PLC and HomePlug specifications) as well as single pair Ethernet. I had always assumed this only worked over mains power, but I quickly learnt that this is not the case at all. So there is plenty to explore and play with here, without the fireworks (sparks).

    Speaking of oscilloscopes, I see there is now a road test open for the Digilent Analog Discovery 3 kit. I recently purchased a similar type of kit and they are ever so useful. These kits are also a good way to learn without have to spend thousands.
