New here

Hi guys, I’m new here so just wanted to check in and introduce myself.

I’m 51 and a lifelong mechanic. Started in HGV’s in the UK, ran away to sea with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, then now find myself fixing trains for Northern Rail via a bit of self employment and several other stupid adventures.

i do have a dream though. Being a biker, I’d love to develop a head up display for speed, revs and gear selection that can be worn like specs inside a helmet. Think Google glass kinda thing. Anyone got any ideas?

Here is a pretty low cost DIY HUD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YK3YPtgHQnc&ab_channel=Ma%C3%B1olo

There are some open source/open hardware glasses which might be handy, e.g. Frame since it may reduce the amount of building of hardware needed.

Another idea, which could be useful to prove out some of the design (say, a release 1.0 before tackling all the parts in a release 2.0) could be to implement using audio initially perhaps, instead of a graphical view.

For instance, speech announcements through an earpiece of speed changes each time it changes significantly, or when other parameters being measured change.

It would be possible to record audio of numbers and announcements (could be a person, or computer-generated) and then have them play out based on sensor measurements. This blog may give some ideas regarding audio playback:  Triggered Sound FX: On-the-Fly Sound Mixing with Pi Pico

    Welcome to element14.

I would classify wanting to be a biker as another stupid adventure.

My brother was into motor bikes his whole life and he had the scars to prove it.

He was even care flighted from one accident by helicopter.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure that the HUD does not take any time away from keeping your eye on the road and what other vehicles are doing around you.

Yes I fully understand and subscribe to your sentiments. To my way of thinking though, an image of current speed floating in your field of vision would mean not having to look down at clocks to see speed readout.  A bar graph for revs and perhaps a 1 through six illumination to the edge for gear position. It’s embarrassing going for seventh gear when you only have six.

Welcome Stevio.  Your helmet project sounds interesting.  Best of luck.

Welcome! Love when people mix two of their passions into their projects. I'm sure you can get a lot of ideas from people here, but I would advice to put safety first and test your prototypes and ideas safely first, and slowly progress until you get something that won't compromise your awareness or health in any way.

Hi Stevio73, I'm ElectronicBiker, been riding for 59 years with more to come! I like your idea, will be following your progress. I don't particularly want a HUD, the instruments on my current main bike are pretty good. But I do want a sat-nav unit, however there is no room on the handlebars for any of the conventional versions. Even the Beeline 2 won't fit very well because of the strengthening brace (trials and scrambler-style) between the handlebars.

I've been thinking for a while now about a display that will fit into a waterproof box about the size of a small Tom-Tom, i.e. with a screen about 4" plus a battery capable of powering it for about 3 or 4 hours (maybe more with a tiny solar panel), and a Blu-Tooth wireless link to a pair of Blu-Tooth earphones worn in-helmet. The waterproof box is to be as flat as possible and worn outside the jacket using an adjustable strap, thus looking like a large wrist-watch. The map display and audio prompts will be visible using a quick glance to whichever arm you choose to wear it on. Personally I find the audio prompts more useful than the map display.

One of the great things is, when you leave the bike to go to pay for your petrol, the whole sat-nav system goes with you. It will not get stolen.
