Top Members Secret Santa - Unwrapped

spannerspencer
spannerspencer over 9 years ago

I don't know if everyone's aware, but there's a private section of the element14 Community for the Top Members, who are brought in by invite (as decided upon by the existing Top Members and the element14 team), where they discuss matters around the direction of the Community, where they help out with beta testing Community updates, and even test out new products, RoadTests & Reviews-style. But mostly they just go waaaaaay off-topic and descend into rants and raves about which Minion avatar is the strangest, or who has the biggest... soldering iron.image

Anyway, in December the Top Members all gathered together around the eggnog tree to exchange techno-gifts, which we (The Management) facilitated to some degree by way of distribution. Now, I know the Christmas season won't get into full swing again until late August, but their Secret Santa gifts are now arriving upon their workshop doorsteps.

So I'd like to invite those Top Members to give us all a big unveiling of what they got, who their Secret Santa was and why they chose the gifts they did, and for the whole Community to join in with a few ideas on what these insane elite engineering eccentrics ("improved" meaning for IEEE?) can do with their hot tech gifts.

Merry Christmas!

Hmm? Oh, to become a Top Member is simple, but not easy. All you have to do is make a fantastic contribution to the element14 Community by way of great projects, insightful blogs, helpful suggestions (in Feedback and Support particularly) and generally spending all your free time on here enjoying yourself image  Trust me, these guys see everything that happens, so your efforts aren't going unnoticed image  Keep it up, and you'll be a Top Member in time for this year's Secret Santa!

Thanks to Element 14 and Spanner for the great idea of a secret Santa! Well firstly, I had moved recently and had no idea anything would come. But then this arrived: I was as eager to find out what was…

A big thanks to Element14, Spanner and my Secret Santa. A huge and heavy 21Kg box arrived this week whilst I was away. I opened it up this afternoon. www.youtube.com/watch Given that I was not really looking…

Thank you Element14 and spannerspencer for facilitating the Secret Santa for us, it was a most excellent idea! Apologies for the delay in posting up what I received, it's a little busy here at the moment. I haven't done a video as I haven't been able to set up a decent way to make videos yet so it's pictures only for this.

A few weeks ago, just before Christmas I received a mystery package out of the blue which contained the following:

    image

This is one of the PCB's that shabaz designed and wrote up a really great blog about (https://www.element14.com/community/community/raspberry-pi/raspberrypi_projects/blog/2016/09/23/hal-cam-9001-building-a-power-over-ethernet-poe-supply).

Basically the main part of this PCB is a design to allow PoE to be used to power a device that doesn't support PoE. The Ethernet cable comes into this board and then another to link out to the non-PoE Ethernet port on the device so data passes through and then power can be taken via a separate connector to the device. It's a great idea, it's like a PoE Injector in reverse.

Another part of it is a USB to 3V3 UART converter, again an incredibly useful thing to have to hand so will get well used.

A few days ago I received the following from Element14:

    image

When I opened it to see what was inside I discovered it was all the parts required to populate the PCB above with plenty of spares. Also included was all the solder paste and a reel of solder too. Excellent!

This is a really great choice for my Secret Santa and I am definitely going to make great use of it so thank you very much!

    Best Regards,

    Rachael

    Oh wow!

Hehe. Will be good to see it all assembled. By the way I wasn't your Secret Santa, so this is really awesome for someone to arrange this for you, really clever idea to have a totally complete project as a xmas gift, I wish I'd thought of such a thing!

Also will be interested in hearing about the solder paste, mine has expired and deciding which one to get..

I keep it in a small peltier type 'fridge from Argos.. (the 'fridge is pretty good, lasted a couple of years so far including the fan, but the AC/DC brick they supply fails, I replaced that with a better brand one from Farnell).

By the way that final part of the PCB is a mini logic probe, I'll paste the schematic here shortly..
