As usual, I voted for FPGAs.  This is not because of any FPGA family that was released this year, but rather because 2015 brought us the first open-source FPGA tools: Project IceStorm: fully open-source…

I agree with John on this one. It's the year of the FPGA. Cost is down, functionality is up. I just got an Altera board for 70 dollars that can practically do anything.

Maybe these are something we could be looking at for RoadTests, is you guys would be interested in that?

Bio Hacking stands good to be the hottest technology of 2016 and beyond. Would like to see it booming big.

FPGA, they've definitely become more approachable and moved into the class of development tools that can be utilised by people new to FPGA's and a reality for home developers!

The others didn't get a look in on account of not been relevant!

IoT = disorganised fragmented unguided mess! It's lacking any standardisation, design guidelines, an actual solid definition of what the title even means and focus seems to revolve around predicting security issues rather than developing functional devices.

Wireless charging = charging mats have been around for 15 years. There's a good chance that wireless charging and wire free devices will go through some advancements leading to new concepts and ways to provide power. (wireless speaker, keyboards, mice, game controllers being powered remotely without the need of batteries). Maybe some other year!

Wearable tech = Another one that's gonna have to go through some innovations and present new concepts for it to be seen as technology of the year material... watches, headphones, pedometers, sports watches, headsets... they aren't new concepts, they've been around forever n are pretty mundane. Even the whole google glasses type things have been tried before, plus their popularity is reflected by the fact that nobody wears them. People tend towards things that are functional when they have to encumber their body with technology.

I'd have to agree - it's considered the 'second digital revolution' and the single biggest business opportunity since the birth of the WWW.

These are not just the views of businesses, but of governments and leading universities too.

I had a hard time deciding between wearable tech and the internet of things, but in the end I had to go with the internet of things.

    I am interested and don't

I have worked in past a couple of years ago on FPGA and what has wondered me was the incredible difference between a producer to another in the method the chips was programmed and how much in some cases this was aleatory. So I have always saw the FPGA approach very interesting and fascinating but extremely confusing by the market, the number of possibilities and versions, for software and hardware. The idea that I had was something the was almost impossible to be "expert" or at least have a good knowledge going in depth in real world applications.

Recently I saw that as johnbeetem point it is a method that is going to be widely diffused. I think also that in a non-conventional way also the great features and flexibility of the PSOC depends on an internal FPGA. This is really fascinating, near to give to the user the option to prototype something very similar to the logic of a processor. Then last in order of time I see that there are FPGA also for the commercial platforms like Raspberry PI, Arduino, etc. So it is surely very interesting at this point to make some road test and comparative analysis. My last impression is that things are coming to be more simple than was only two or three years ago.

    Enrico

One thing I'd really like is to have the http://www.element14.com/community/groups/fpga-group back on the Topics tab at the top of the page.  The other nominated tech topics are all there in one form or another.

I was torn between both IoT and FPGA. Both are emerging technologies (FPGA has been around awhile but has an open source tool now) and are really awesome. I decided to go with IoT though, since that has been something I have been working on
