We'd known for many months that there was an upgrade in the works, but as far as I know nobody was invited to help beta test it prior to release. Possibly a lot of the issues raised could have been resolved easily by doing that.

You make a good point. Members who showed an interest in fault-finding could have been invited to participate in beta testing and bug tracking. This could have happened 'offline' or in a separate ticketing/helpdesk system such as osTicket.

I for one would've been interested in participating.

    Paul

    You are probably right.

However a wise manager would have harnessed that energy and found a way to be able to use the feedback to rectify the issues.

If they wanted it to be less visible then inviting (and responding) to participate off line is an option.

Ignoring it in the hope it goes away sometimes works, and sometimes makes the situation worse.

As humans we are conditioned to expect a response, and as children we get wise to the type of response we can expect from the situation, and adjust the method of delivery to suit.

Your voting or abstinence is perfectly valid.

I said there were many people deserving of a vote, and both of you have contributed so much in different ways.

Someone who has done more to point out the issues is Coder27, who for his troubles got banned, so what sort of message is that .... keep quiet or we'll do it for you.?

I had the pleasure of exchanging a few messages with Coder27, and I couldn't decide whether it was a dry sense of humour or a negativity towards the community.

There is a fine line between pointing out issues and nagging. There was a point when the discussions board was flooded with raised issues, which pushed all other content into further pages. I would imagine this gave a poor impression to any new users who could have (and probably did in a few cases) turn about and exit.

    Good point.

I think the PiFace showed how many didn't even bother to meet the requirements.

I also noted the high number of new members.

On another note for people who don't appear to actively contribute to the community, when you look at the RoadTest applicants, how many of them are level 0 ?  So at least appear to have simply joined for the chance to get some free stuff.  How many of those go on to become active participants ?

I'm glad you posted that link as I hadn't seen it.

congrats Shabaz, and well done Victor for being up front about the way these can be manipulated.

Note to administrators ... for the future, please post a link in the poll, so we can find the result.

With a recent celebration of 200k members on element14, seeing only 36 reactions on the 'community member of the year'

I knew about the poll, stumbled across it almost by accident. Something that's commonly the only way you find stuff here.

I didn't vote myself as I think it's a bit unfair to vote for something like this when your own name is in the list.  It was also fairly obvious that the product of the year was being promoted somewhere due to the number of responses compared to the rest.  Then when you jumped something like 15 votes overnight I was slightly suspicious image

Generally, when you look at the members list, there's a huge number of people at level 0 or 1, who generally appear to have logged in exactly once on the day the account was created.  There's been the odd complaint over in Feedback & Support about people having to log in to download the docs for something they've bought (i.e. buy a piface, get a card with a url in the box, need to create an account to download the doc). So I wonder just how many of the 'members' joined for no other reason and will never log in again.

I'm sure the information is available to e14 and it could be interesting to get a breakdown of accounts logged into only once vs multiple times and active (i.e. contributed something, not just logged in) in the last week/month/year etc.  I don't expect to ever see those numbers since they'll be far less impressive that a headline of 200k members image

Unfotunately no response yet from element 14 here, and not a word about the level of contribution on and the winners are....... Hmmm... Self-reflection anyone?

    Anyway: Congratulations shabaz!!!
