An Interesting Find

I work with Fiber Optics these days (fiber sensing to be precise). I'd just come back from a survey and I was hooking up the field systems for testing back at the office when I found this bulkhead adapter on the front of a circulator box. Look closely and you'll see a piece of the Zirconia sleeve has broken off and is blocking the insertion path for the fiber cable. If I hadn't noticed this, I probably would have ruined whatever cable I would have tried to insert. Sometimes you just get lucky ...

And I though polishing the glass ends on the cable was all that mattered. Now this!image

Yes, with optics you must always verify that your path is free of obstructions and that your surfaces are clean.

Though if you are using some high powered lasers, you can get some very cool explosions.  Unfortunately these are quite expensive.

It was really interesting, because I had never seen one fail like this before. I found out later, they were cheaply made adapters (I'll give you one guess where it was made). Apparently the good ones have metallic sleeves.
