Participating on the element14 Community

2 Aug 2013

Hi Everyone.

Last week we reminded everyone about our community guidelines to ensure that our members treat each other with respect when communicating on element14. We'd like to expand upon this a little by talking about the companies we do business with.

As a global distributor, Premier Farnell manages relationships with hundreds of suppliers, vendors, and strategic partners. You've probably noticed that we have representatives from dozens of suppliers here on element14—companies like the Raspberry Pi Foundation, Freescale, Texas Instruments, and many more. These companies participate on element14 because they love helping engineers by answering their questions, or introducing them to some hot new technology.

We encourage everyone to share their opinions about engineering, technology, and cool new products. We want to hear about what works and what doesn’t work. The community is a collaborative space where members can help each other! That said, everyone should use common courtesy and respect in their interactions on the site.  If you've had a negative experience with a supplier, please work directly with them to resolve the issue. We think you'll find they are all too-ready to help resolve the problem.

Let's keep element14 a place where everyone can discover, explore, and participate in a civil manner.  If you have any questions about our terms of service, check out our Community Guidelines, or post a question here in Feedback & Support, and thanks again for being part of our growing community!

Cheers,

Sagar Jethani

I agree about maintaining good conduct within the Element 14 community. Treat everyone like you wish to be treated. Never post anything you wouldn't want your mother to read. If someone upsets you, wait…

Yes, I have that figured out, but I think it may be confusing for someone

who doesn't understand that Internal/External refers to where your email goes,

    rather than your employer.

'fustini' is external because I use my personal email address for it.  'fustiniadmin' is tied to my Premier Farnell email address and I use it when I'm posting/replying in an official capacity.

    Sagar,

You've probably noticed that we have representatives from dozens of suppliers here on element14—companies like the Raspberry Pi Foundation, Freescale, Texas Instruments, and many more.

Actually, I haven't noticed dozens of supplier representives from RPF, Freescale, and TI, etc.

I've noticed Jason Kridner from TI/Beagleboard.org post recently, but not any uncivil replies.

I've noticed Gert van Loo, designer of the gertboard, post recently, but not any uncivil replies.

I've noticed some uncivil comments directed for example at Cambridge or Oxford folks,

but not at any supplier reps here, and I don't think any of the participants in that discussion

show Cambridge or Oxford as their University.

I've noticed a rant directed at BBB, but it didn't appear to be serious.

If the supplier reps here are mostly anonymous, please encourage them to identify themselves.

I think it works better all around if supplier reps are known.  If you can post a list of the known

supplier reps here, that would be wonderful.

Ah, that would explain why Drew shows up as "External".

It might be a good idea to somehow change that to Internal to avoid any confusion.

Similarly, Cabe has been described here:

    http://www.element14.com/community/community/members/blog/2013/06/21/element14-communitys-top-10-most-helpful-and-amazing-members

as "one of element14 Community’s official bloggers".  Does that mean he is really Internal?

Just got confirmation to what I suspected - we do not require disclosure from suppliers.   The "Type" field in a member's profile is something automatically assigned and the individual member can not change or control (unless they change their email address) as it's based on the email address they used to register.  For example, anyone who registers with an email address assigned to employees from element14 would be marked as "internal" like you see on my profile.  If a supplier registers their account with a "Gmail" email account the "type" would be reflected as "external" instead of "supplier".
