The Gift Of STEM - STEM Group Kit Give away!

image

This holiday season we are giving the Gift of STEM to small maker and STEM Groups throughout December.

We want you to help play Santa and help out a local STEM group receive a selection of electronic kits!

What is STEM:
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is a broad term used to group together several academic disciplines.

Why is STEM Important
STEM Teaches Critical Thinking and Innovation in children and adults. Employment in STEM occupations is projected to grow 8.8% by 2028, and healthcare occupations, which generally require a strong STEM background, are projected to grow even more. Meanwhile, non-STEM occupations will only grow 5%.

What We Did:
We gave away a few parcels of STEM related electronic sets on the 2022 Holiday Season to Local STEM Groups. This could include things like a few multimeters from Multicomp, a classroom set of microbit or some Raspberry Pi Pico.

Great initiative - this kind of program would have made a difference to me if it had been implemented when I was in school.

Cornwall Tech Jams - Gift Of STEM

"The Cornwall Tech Jams were set up to provide extra access to computers and technology where children may not have them within school or at home.

They also provide that extra interest in computing in the physical world away from mainstream curriculum. And being run by those within the industry in Cornwall provide the children and their parents the opportunity to engage directly with it. Building the community of interested and like minded parties is part of Software Cornwall's aim. Engaging with companies and anyone potentially interested to highlight the benefits of coding, software development and jobs available locally. It also provides a step for those keen to take it further to attend the work experiences provided by Software Cornwall.

The kit will provide added interest to the Cornwall Tech Jams. Microbits are used a lot as they are a very rewarding way of engaging with children. But the Arduinos, TinkerKit and Marty Robot are all completely new to the Jams. These will provide extra pathways to engagement for different levels of interested children.

The girls who started building the robot with their mother are really keen to return to finish the build.

They turned up asking to build a robot and that is exactly what they did."

Looks like fun! Kids learn super-fast at these young ages too.

I'm going to look for something similar local to me, if it exists, so that I can recommend it to a few families.

We have weekly meetings, openlabs when everybody can access the maker space and work at his/her own project

True!  The test jig for the road test Sound Measurement and Vibration Measurement with the MCC 172 and the Raspberry Pi was made at Ingegno in Gent by balearicdynamics and me. We blogged about this a while ago: Field Trip to Enrico and the Ingegno Maker Space.

Great initiative. I hope you can consider the young makers at the Ingegno maker space in Gent - Belgium as candidates to recieve a set of Raspberry Pi Pico. Enrico Miglino and Jan Cumps are frequent visitors of our  makerspace and warmly encouraged us to take this opportunity. With a group of 12 kids we would like to  delve into the ESA cansat competitions and start to learn the basics to then be able to participate next year.

Our group are enthousiastic kids between 10 and 15 year. In afterschool club we train as makers :-) we have many girls participating and we actively recruit them. The group is mixed (so not girls only) and that is by choice.

We have weekly meetings, openlabs when everybody can access the maker space and work at his/her own project and we also organise bootcamps in summer.
