  • I'm not actually 100% sure what my first measurement tool was.

     

    It was likely this little tape measure. As you can see, I scratched my name into it, so I most likely received it while quite young and had to protect it from my siblings taking or losing it.

    For electronic measurement, it was probably this DMM that my parents bought me waaaaay back in 1991. At the time I didn't actually fully appreciate the capabilities of this tiny pocket sized tester - rather than the big dial and gauge it does all the range settings magically and shows it on one little calculator sized display. As you can see, at $45 it was quite pricey for 1991 too. Remember Radio Shack? image

    Unfortunately, it doesn't work anymore. At one point the leads broke off so I soldered on these new ones. I don't recall when it stopped working. I don't have the heart to throw it out even though it doesn't work and I have better units - it's one of those reminders of how my parents supported my hobbies and careers, without knowing anything about it themselves, in ways I didn't really recognize until much later on in life.
