  • I really do feel intimidated by a majority of the folks here who have had their first instrument as a bulky analog voltmeter. Mine was a really really cheap digital multimeter that I purchased from a local electrical store for a little under 3$. It was for my first electronics project exhibition back in high school.

    I really laugh when I look back at the good old days when all I knew to use the multimeter for was to measure the voltage of a lead acid battery. That multimeter has been my only companion for 5 years now in every project I have ever done. Ditch the CAT ratings and fuss people make about unsoldered leads!! I have used this in projects ranging from a simple timer to checking battery voltage for a Formula Student Electric racecar. I have had no complaints till date except ofcourse replacing batteries or fuses. The continuity buzzer volume has reduced but I dont really mind that.

    I must say that this priceless equipment has had an 'instrumental' role in shaping my career and making me the engineer I am today. It would always occupy a special place in my heart.

    Reading the other stories just made me wonder whether my children would have the same reaction I had on seeing all these analog measuring tools when they read about my DM story. Who knows what their equipment would be?? Hall sensors??

    Would they even use scopes? I wouldn't be surprised if they call the Scope block on Simulink their first test equipment

    If the £3 electronic DMM had been around when I purchased my £112 (equivalent) meter in 1979 I would have definately bought one, so no worries there. I now have four of these yellow DMMs and like you, find them brilliant. I'm sure that for some uses more accurate and robust meters are needed but I do not walk in those circles so anything with 3 or more digits does me, two digits would probably be enough!
