I like that the multimeter is labelled 'Multimeter 1' correctly in anticipation of building your career and eventually owning subsequent ones : )

First tool was a Micronta multimeter.
But used the top tier Fluke's when studying and a Tektronix oscilloscope with a LCD backlit screen back in 1997. Always wanted both since.

I like the Avos. You can find Model 8s on eBay and occasionally FaceBook Marketplace and the model 8s are usually the ones in the ‘best’ condition. You shouldn’t need to pay anything over £100 and typically about half that but it all seems to depend on condition. There are chancers aiming for a few £100’s but they can be ignored. Apparently, avoid the Model 7s.

I really want a model 40 but they are much harder to come by, and when I find one it’s condition can be described as dubious at best!

I met Avo 8s at University and I have always wanted one. I always assumed that sooner or later I would find one in a shop somewhere, second hand, as there must have been hundreds of thousands of them made. But, to this day I have never seen one.

I still use my tongue on 9V batteries. So much quicker than finding a meter.

When I was 7 I was given a cheap multimeter for Christmas with a basic electronics project board (the one with the springs). I do still have the multimeter but was retired years ago when I upgraded to a fluke.

This multimeter changed my life, I was fascinated about all the functions it had and had to find a way to use them.

For me its my dads old Avo 8. For ages as a kid I marveled at this 'thing' that kind of looked like an upside down smiley face, sitting in one of dads cupboards. I was intrigued so much that my dad got it out to show me it and explain what it was. At a very young age I spent loads of time with my dad using it to repair an old Telefunken mains powered valve radio. (amongst many other things, but that was certainly the highlight with its glowing valves) At my age then, health and safety would have probably had a fit, but I was hooked! It became a hobby, I got an apprenticeship, then used my BTEC quals to get onto an engineering degree and am now a Chartered Engineer.... all because of that Avo 8! Incidentally we still have it in its original box and yes it does still get used :-)
