When I was an engineering co-op in college I had a job working with the standby power group of a Cummins distributor. We had a big job putting a 1MW genset in a data center. Awesome unit with a quad turbo…

My best electronics repair was a CNG boiler. Long story short: just before the freezing winter, my friend had a control board of a CNG boiler failure. It heated water and all the rooms. He was offered…

Just wanted to put this up and say thanks to the folks at element14, I received the prize from the competition and just wanted to put up this pic. The soldering station is amazing, and by happy coincidence…

At this point I've had a wide range of repairs that saved either my rear or someone elses but the one that stands out the most in my memory was during a blizzard probably 10 years ago or more. My wife had a 99 grand caravan awd and went shopping with my 3 toddler boys at the time. The van had a random problem of a no start that the previous owner neglected to mention. My wife went inside the store for about 20 min. When she came out the van wouldn't start and the security system was setting itself. So I left work early to go see what was going on. I messed around in a foot of snow for an hour or so. I got so angry I hit the dashboard and bam! all the lights on the cluster started going bonkers. Being an auto mechanic at the time I had some tools with me so I took the cluster out of the dashboard (this was before any service bulletins for this issue on the vehicle came out). Where the main power plug went into the cluster i found a cracked solder joint on the circuit board that was randomly loosing connection. I dont have a clue how i found it but i did!! When I got back to the shop I uploaded the issue to alldata and another program we had at the time then found out it was a huge problem that model year but no one had the fix for it until I threw it up. Probably not my best story but I was very proud of myself that day for saving my family!!
