What do you think is the best Single board Computer in the market?

There are too many options to choose from now. There is no right or wrong answer here. Please tell us why in the comments section below.

 

I have created this document so that we can compare all the SBCs in one place. Please edit it and add information on the SBCs you know about for the benefit of the community.

  • There are so many options and the "best" really does depend on what your project requirements are. For the same person the best may well change a lot depending on the design requirements for what they are working on at the time.

     

    A really nice tiny embedded ARM board running Linux that I came across a little while ago is the Arietta G25 by ACME Systems: Arietta G25 - Low cost Linux embedded module

     

    It has a 400MHz ARM9 and it's the tiny form factor and pure stripped back to the bare minimum that I like about this. I have a project I am working on where this will be ideal for my initial prototypes.

    - What is the nature of the project?  Given the G25 specs, I would guess an engineering or science interfacing application.  Which O/S distro are you going to use or are you going to bootstrap an app on your own?

    Hi Richard,

     

    It's a networked monitoring / control application and it needs to interface to other cards in the system via a LIN bus which was another reason for looking at that processor. This particular board will only be used for a lab based prototype but to get me going quickly and evaluate the processor, the final design will have the processor designed into the main board and will give me access to the Ethernet port. I'll just run the linux distro I can download from them for the prototype but will likely do something completely stripped back and customised for the final design, I've not looked too much into that yet.

    That articlereminded me of the 1970s Bisynchronous 3270 multi-drop (master/slave polling) protocol with one-byte frame identifiers that was so common back then.  Even the max speed (20 kbit/sec) is about the same as the old days.  Of course, the hardware today is more reliable and less expensive.

     

    So, this is an automobile network application?  Do you work for a manufacturer or a 3rd party?

    Not to beat this subject into the ground but I just saw a working Arduino-based application as a LIN protocol analyzer:

     

         Master === Arduino === Slave 1 === Slave 2 .....

    Arduino would be an excellent low-cost tool for the job.
