Electric cars! Nothing says "I take your new technology seriously" like forbidding a manufacturer from selling a safe product in your state. I'm speaking of Tesla, which is banned from selling its cars…

Everything on the list is on the way... but in the short term I wager 3D printing will grow the most. There are just so many printers now... and so many on the way. C

John, Your timing is uncanny! I listened to a Planet Money episode this weekend which exactly addressed this topic. This might be the only time I've actually shouted at my radio. It's a cronyistic, inefficient…

A good spam-killer and a technology to give advertisements at the right time. Real advertising when you and the advertiser benefit most of it, and clearing all nonsense out of the way of interesting info when you're not looking for it.

How about a mention of distributed sensing technology? Imagine a strain gauge or thermometer that is 100 km long and has a spatial resolution of 2-5 cm.

Agree with this, lots of governments are making more effort in green and re useable energy / technologies to comply with the carbon emissions thingy that theyre going on about just lately so thats where a lot of their funding is likely to end up. That and the continued efforts to make nuclear fusion power plants a reality, though thats probaby a much longer term goal.

If virtual reality eyewear also includes augmented reality then I can also see that side of things coming along a lot (personally I don't like the idea of walking round looking like a total idiot but theres some that will plus other applications like improving gaming experience and bringing computer games out into the real world, not just with movement sensors but also by augmenting your actual playing space so your room can become a projection of the game you play).

Wearable seem to come and go a lot more through fashions than anything else, and also seem to find the place they belong to. I use a GPS watch, accelerometer in my shoes, heartrate monitor and phone on my arm for running with but not as part of my everyday life.

Personally I hope the internet of things reaches a limit of what's considered acceptable, my kettle having the ability to log when it gets boiled, and how often and how much water goes in it scares me. Really not my cup of tea hah!

Define "important".  I agree that, in terms of sales, the embedded industry will only increase its sharehold over the coming two years, but I'm surprised that there's been no mention of solar technology and/or high-efficiency lighting/display technology (excepting "virtual eyewear").

I don't know if it'll be within two years, but when truly flat/flexible displays become available, everyone's television will be a "poster on the wall" that they can roll up and take with them if they want to watch the Superbowl (on their TV) at a friend's house, and "invisible soldiers" will wear "display fabric" clothing that simply projects the scenery in back of them over their entire body, making them blend in perfectly.

You might add flexible displays to the list. Don't know if they will be the most important, but there will be a lot of consumer money spent on them.
