Problem with Arduino Mega

Hi all,

I own an Arduino mega 2560 and have been having problems with it recently. When I load a sketch, this error comes up :

avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout

I can't figure out what it is ( I've read that its a problem with the communication with the computer). When I plug it in the green power LED turns on and so does the orange pin 13 LED. I think that the sketches we're uploading at one point ( I'm not 100% sure as I didn't get it doing anything due to my lack of arduino knowledge ). I am on mac running OS X Yosemite.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the advice, I selected the right board ans processor but still nothing. I think the problem is the Port, I read somewhere that is should be port " /dev/tty.usbmodem1411 " but I only have "/dev/cu". Any more ideas?

p.s. the LEDs don't flash when programming

Is AVRISP the right programmer ?I know this is the default now and once I can find my Mega I will try it but that seems to be the 6 pin port from memory

It seems there are some issues with the wrong driver being installed.

Sparkfun is most likely to be with genuine Arduino products, but might help
