New a FGPA emulates UNO with extra's

I was out of the country since October and saw this this XLR8 FPGA-Accelerated Arduino Clone Kickstarter is Live | EE Times. After reading the article , they said;

If you have a project that's using an Uno, you can swap in an XLR8 board right out of the box, and it will just work. You won't even know you're actually running your sketch on an FPGA, at least not until you fire up one of the accelerated functions... and then the magic happens.

Interesting so I looked up the https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/814866572/xlr8-arduino-compatible-fpga-based-application-acc

and sad to see the goal may not be reached, Anyone have comments why?

Clem

    It makes sense to compare XLR8 to the Papilio DUO, which is US$88. The DUO has a real ATmega32U4 chip, a Xilinx Spartan-6 LX9, and 512KB of SRAM (there's a more expensive version with 2MB). It also has…

    I think not enough noise  so that not a lot of people know about it (I didn't know about this campaign although I'm following FPGA related blogs/tweets),

    a price of $65 is maybe too high for an impulsive click on the "Back this Project" button (although it is a normal price for an FPGA dev board),

    and the fact that FPGA isn't that popular -  so the pool of possible crowdfunders may be low.

    Maybe let's check how many FPGA dev board kickstarters actually got funded?

    17 FPGA projects.

    2 most likely will not get funded (Mango and the XLR8 you mention - both very similar projects)

    9 unsuccessful

    6 successful, including one that has everything that XLR8 and Mango are doing

    I searched kickstarter for the word FPGA, and then checked the ones that reached their funding goal - both for the completed and active projects.

    IT looks like this one is going to fail, with only 20% reached and 4 or less days to go, it looks nice but way too expensive when trying to attract the UNO folks

    Mango seems like a decent board but it's pretty expensive when you include the USB programmer (US$129 total).  You might be able to do better with a $79 early bird plus a USB programmer from somewhere else.  OTOH, a Papilio DUO includes the USB programmer on-board: you just need a Mini USB cable.
