Help!! Arduino camera (as video)

Former Member
Former Member over 9 years ago

Hi everybody!! I am working on my graduation project, and I want need to record a light coming from an optical cable with Arduino, i'm don't know much about arduino.

Could somebody help??
I noticed that with Arduino Uno you can use the camera for pictures. Is it possible to record??

Help please.

If you are shining a 850nm laser directly down the fibre then you could detect it with a laser light detector such as: https://www.finisar.com/optical-components/hfd3180-103

Are you wanting to record a video feed,  or just data points when light is present on the cable output?

Regardless;  what kind of output  (TOSLink, fiber, other)?

well...it will be from an end of a fiber. That end should be near the camera so it can record some spots( two points coming out of the camera). It should be a video feed. I think that will use a lot od space in the computer.
    Any idea??
    Thanks a lot!!

Fiber optic cables have different frequencies from the light you and me see. That is why you are warned never look t the light! It will burn the retina severely depending on time of exposure. Please read Understanding Wavelengths In Fiber Optics  before proceeding. Understanding is key to safety.

Also the camera must be capable of the same frequencies. Curiosity is good so long as you research well before proceeding. Ask yourself what is the goal or hypothesis you are going to test. Make this as scientific as possible. I hope you learn much.

    Excellent response Clem.

Most fiber-optic runs at either 850 or 1350nm. Both are generally outside the wavelength for cameras (1350 certainly so). This IS laser, so a camera sensor will quickly burn out (even at 5mw); and, as Clem pointed out is a hazard to eyes.

You might want to think about using a networked Arduino to check incoming packets.

well...I want to say to you that I did this experiment already in an Erasmus program. And it works!! I just need to redo it so I can present it for my thesis...
I would appreciate if somebody would answer me if is possible with Arduino.

I should use an 850 nm laser.

    I agree too with Clem.

Anyway yes camera sensors are a little more sensitive than the human eye so they can see a piece of IR spectrum, (you can verify it with your phone and the tv remote, just point the camera to the ir led and press a button, you will see a white light, with a laser probably you will burn the camera as Brian wrote). If it is only for demonstration purpose you can use an IR led instead of a laser.

Also camera sensors aren't all equal, probably with some type of camera you can see a piece of ir spectrum and with other no.

I have never tried to acquire picture with arduino but yes you can do it (take a look here How to use OV7670 Camera Module with Arduino? ), but don't expect high resolution or fast acquiring images.

Honestly I can't understand what do you want to obtain with this project, what is the final goal?

Yes it is possible. You can record with camera but for that you must have Arduino compatible camera. Interface camera with arduino and record whatever you want.
