Realtek RT18189ES WIFI Chip Alternatives

Question

Just curious if anyone knows of a better chip to use then the Realtek RT18189ES WIFI Chip? Need longer range possibly an antenna alternative as well.

Have you tried the ESP8266 type modules? There seem to be a handful of variations that have antenna connections. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESP8266 Also maybe look at LoraWan (Here's a video I saw recently). I'm not sure if that's standard Internet type WiFi, but it claims extra long range. Cheers, -Nico

Wesley, @ ntewinkel might be on to something. The ESP8266 class of parts list a power output of 19.5dBm (802.11b) (documentation says that the power amp can be set to 25dBm), where the RTL8189ES (note RTL not RT1) has an output power of 16/17dBm. Gene
