Simple circuiting question, using Arduino

I want to control a 24v DC circuit with a my arduino, what would be the proper component and roughly how would I use it. Basically when I set a pin to high, I want it to switch the 24V on, and turn it off when set to low. From what I can gather, I need a MOSFET, but I have minimal knowledge on what to look for in one. Would someone be able to assist me?

 

(p.s. This is my first discussion, sorry if I am doing this incorrectly)

    I think the OP wanted to control a 24v item.

    This is a very good referemce for anyone wanting to measure a 24v voltage.

     

     

    One thing that you might see on some circuits is a diode at the pin of the micro that has its anode connected to the supply.

    This makes sure the voltage at the pin can never be more tha 0.5v higher than the supply  ...which strangely fits within most IC specs.

     

    Of course this theory is only any good if the series resitor is in place otherwise the supply could get driven upwards.

    You are talking over my head with that diode idea.   The senario as I understood it was that how best to safeguard the microC in case the NFET shorted out completely.  So, Mark, are you saying that there are good reasons to also add the diode you mentioned in addition to the voltage divider in my illustration?  Most NFETs need very little V+I  at the gate to turm them on, but, I aslo believe opto-isolators are a great way to go.

    If you're simply wanting to stop a large voltage coming back from the 'failed' transistor/mosfet then a simple resistor between the pin and the base/gate with a 5.1v zener between the base/gate to ground should be  enough.

     

    Most NPN configured transistors that fail due to excess voltage, tend to go short circuit between the base and collector.

    This then tends to make the base and emitter conduct, which drops the voltage to around 0.6v.

    Depending on the load on the collector, the base junction either survives and carries the current, or it self destructs.

     

    For input voltages being applied to a pin, having a series resistor between the input voltage and the controller pin is good practice/essential.

    If you have a diode that has its anode to +5v (or supply) and the cathode connected to the input pin (ie in reverse bias) the voltage on the pin cannot exceed the supply (+0.6v).

    The difference is 'lost' across the resistor.

    Its a MJE3055T, a quick google search of the part number brought up the datasheet. I originally was looking for a IRF744N MOSFET, but all the radioshacks in my area seem to be out of almost all electrical components so I went with the NPN transitor because I thought I knew what I was doing haha.
