Hall effect flow meter help

I have a hall effect flow meter and I can get it to read the current flow.....but, what I need to do is read the total  (say 100 litres) and then stop the flow thru a solenoid.  At the same time have a redundant timed stop that starts timing when the flow starts...energizing the solenoid, then de-energizing the solenoid (stopping flow) after 10 minutes.  I have no idea how to do the code here...please help.  Also, was wondering if I could done with Minibloq graffic programer? (or is minibloq limited)....as I'm using this for the rest of this project.  Thank you GJ.

    You will need to count the number of pulses in a period of time to calculate the total volume. The sensor specs. will have a factor specified which will indicate the liters/pulse. You will need a timer…

    Am I clear on what I'm tryin' to do?  Basically I want to fill a tank to a specific volume....and then stop the filling.  Tho I'm very new to arduino I am amazingly able to read the flow rate thru the flow sensor...I just can't get a total in litres or whatever.  Am I overlooking something simple and obvious?

     

    Oh,....and is this the right place to post this?

    Hi Jack,

     

    I'm no expert in this : ( but maybe a float switch would be easier to judge a specific level, rather than a flow sensor.

     

    However, if you are already able to obtain the flow rate (e.g. liters per sec) , you just need to multiply by time  - the arduino has a wait function, so you can wait a specific time, e.g. 500msec. If the flow is variable, you do the same thing, but technically an integration, which again you can do by multiplication (and summation) - also known as area under the curve - wikipedia on integration will have the info.

You will need a timer, a pulse counter and some math. An arduino will accomplish this very easily. Look at some of the basic examples of counters/timers on http://www.arduino.cc

    Thanks all...

     

    I'll have to test the rest of the code I have now....then post.  Perhaps I'm being lazyish...but I'm struggling and trying to do it without having to go back to school for a degree in calculus. Great suggestion...the float switch but I probably could get around using the arduino all together if I went that route.  I did try and haven't had much luck in finding any real examples of the flow meter/ total...tho, the timed stop I should be able to figure out.  Do you think if I counted all the pulses for the flow stop (and scaled it for the read-out) that would be accurate and consistent....hmmm?  Am I looking to deep....back to the lab.
