Where should I go to learn about steppers motors?

lokkytron
lokkytron over 10 years ago

Well, I am trying to make a choice about dc motor with variable speed or step by step motor with microsteps driver to control the mechanism that I explained here

What i need to know is: Is there any resource in this site or another where i can start to learn about dc motors?

I am making random readings after many searches in google... but i don't know enough about these motors to get usefull information.

Thank you.

You could read a bit about a few different types of motors here: http://www.element14.com/community/community/applications/industrial-automation/blog/2015/02/14/motors--pm-dc-bldc-servo-stepper-moving…

Hi lokkytron you could also have a quick look here: http://www.element14.com/community/people/neilk/blog/2015/01/24/arduino-controlling-stepper-motor-28byj-48-with-accelstepper-library and perhaps here…

Sounds like you need to control speed and position, in which case the stepper motor is a straightforward solution if you are not looking for very high speed or very high torque. If you use a dc motor you…

...also there are a lot of useful application notes on the Texas Inst website as they make the chips you need for many types of drives, you could start at Application - Motor Drive & Control - TI.com...Peter

And you are right, I need a very slow movement and a high control of position.

The torque is a trouble, I haven't yet decided how the mechanism will be mounted. In addition I need to mount a small prototype to practice and learn so much as i can, but then I will have to mount the same mechanism but a very heavy version (10-12 kgr)

I have some ideas but not ordered yet in my head... so I was asking, trying to find the best way to accomplish, or at least began with I want to make.

good luck with your design deliberations. Slow speed and high torque a good combination as you can choose a smallish motor and add a high ratio gearbox. You need to check the motor speed vs torque characteristic to make sure you get the torque at the speed you want. Torque is multiplied by the gear ratio and speed divided. It still sounds to me like a good stepper motor application as long as you have enough torque and do not slip steps.
