I think the majority of the cost there is for what I assume is a genuine Arduino. Even so it's a bit steep as you say. you can get one of those everything and the kitchen sink style kits for $30-40 less…

mcb1 this particular kit is not necessary but a kit that includes all necessary components and a written component in package deal in my experience is easier to get approved if the home school program is the one paying for it. the written component gives a guide that the student can follow and the school will be able to reference his progress with the book, not you tube videos and online tutorials. don't get me wrong i love videos and tutorials but as for a teacher keeping track of the students progress and being able to give him some kind of grade this i think is a more practical solution or one like it.

you know in looking closer at this this does not seem to have the written component it seems that you have to get that at an additional cost image well im going back on this DONT GET IT!!. For what ever reason i thought it came with http://www.makershed.com/products/beginner-arduino-pdf-bundle and it does not! and for that price with out these ...? Nope!

I saw the link ( https://opensourcehardwaregroup.com/) that you posted and that looks like a good starting point.

    any way good luck!!

The itead studio has a whole lot of information with it, however for the program we deliver, it didn't suit ... so I really didn't pay much attention.

Personally I think videos are overrated as a learning tool.

Books and Paper based aids allow the user to retrace the previous information and skim the content to pick up the clue they need.

I used this link for a number of books that can be downloaded for free.

I particularily like the Arduino Cookbook Arduino Cookbook, 2nd Edition - Free Download eBook - pdf
