Arduino UNO R4 WiFi LED Demo

dougw
dougw over 2 years ago

element14 sent me an Arduino UNO R4 WiFi, which features a Renesas RA4M1 MCU. (Arm Cortex M4 48MHz).

This is a major upgrade over the original UNO. It is also a lot of fun to play with since it comes with a 12x8 LED matrix.

This is a quick demo of the LEDs in action...

I think I posted this in the wrong area - I can't edit it. I worked out the graphics with a spreadsheet that shows the graphic as you enter ones in cells and computes the 32 bit hex numbers for the program…

Great! You can also use the online LED matrix editor ledmatrix-editor.arduino.cc/

I didn't measure performance, although I had it scrolling so fast it was just a blur. This LED matrix is more capable than the micro:bit, the spacing also is tighter which makes the graphics more readable. And I got the LEDs to be viewable by my camera - the micro:bit multiplexing makes that display tough to video.

Note - I have covered the LEDs with dark window tint film to hide the unlit LEDs.

I also made a demo using the Arduino UNO R4 Minima which I received at the same time. That demo, linked here, is a much bigger display.

Thank you for posting this, dougw .Mine arrived a few days ago but I haven't made the time to fire it up yet.  I'm excited to give it a whirl.  I love Arduinos.

Great! Thanks for sharing about this. I was looking at the features of this board and a comparison table of memory, RAM and peripherals with an earlier UNO version - just amazing.

Renesas somehow has a very good MCU product line and application specific veraints in a family all at a relatively lower pricepoint.

We had to use this approach when we were putting text and symbols on displays in the 1980's.

You still have to understand the bits and bytes.

Thank you so much. I am confused about which one will be more convenient. Wifi or Minima?

if you just want an mcu board, go minima, if wifi and the matrix are features you need go wifi, I got both, so I can use whatever feels apropriate depending on  the project.
