Arduino IDE 2.3.3 hangs when trying to download boards package_index.json

I just ran into an unexpected issue when I was trying to update code for a project.  When I had previously closed the IDE yesterday I had the Serial Monitor open.  Today when I opened the code in a fresh instance of the IDE it got stuck trying to download the first package_index.json that I have in my Additional Boards Manager URLs.

I discovered that it is possibly a known issue with the IDE - Exceptionally long duration of "Downloading index: ....  What fixed it for me was closing the Serial Monitor and reopening it after the IDE finished startup.  I am using IDE version 2.3.3 and there isn't any released update available so I guess the problem is not fixed yet.

Just thought I'd mention it here as it surprised me because I hadn't updated either the code or IDE and would never have expected an interaction with the Serial Monitor.  Maybe I'll just remember to close it when I shutdown.

It will be worth keeping an eye on release notes or bug reports for future updates of Arduino IDE to see if they address this specific issue.

I don't update the IDE that frequently so I don't know when this issue started (it appears that it might have been 2.3.x).  I'm glad that the workaround didn't require downgrading the IDE version.  I have noticed that recently when I update the Boards Manager that some of the more active board packages take forever to update.

The problem does not seem to be boards specific for me - just hangs on the first additional package index it tries to download.  In my case it is the m5stack.  I'm working with a PicoW.

Too bad you can't just close the Serial Monitor when it hangs.  Just makes it a slight annoyance for me.

I don't usually update it that often either, but I was sent a Waveshare ESP32-S3 2.8inch Capacitive Touch Display Development Board to test and the computer I had on hand didn't have the Arduino IDE installed.

Its good to see you shared this information. I've been using the Arduino IDE since 2022 but never encountered such an issue, but I would be more careful because I hate to get stuck in such non relating errors from code .
