Arduino Mega 2560 connection issues

victorduchateau

Hi,

I've been using Arduinos for quite a while now and know a lot about them. But recently none of my Arduino Mega 2560's would connect to any of my computers (Mac and Windows).

When I plug my Arduino Mega's in my computer, no serial port will show up in the tools section in the arduino program (one of the arduinos even is brand new and never used).

On Windows when I go to device manager, the COM port also doesn't show up there either.

I'm sure there's an easy fix for this

Please reply if you know a solution

Thanks

Victor

Try to uninstall and then reinstall the FTDI drivers.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

I did what you said and the newest board now works. The old Arduino Mega however still doesn't work.

    Regards

    Victor

As I remember, the older mega use anAtmega16U2 to perform USB-UART function. If so, they will appear with the "lemon" sign in  Device Manager. You can either remove the driver and let the computer re-detect it, or you can try to use driver update and hope it works. In the worst case scenario, uninstall the IDE and then reinstall it.

It is also possible the 8U2 chip (Not FTDI on the older mega) is fried, this can happen depending on what you do with the device. I have had it happen once.

You can re-flash them using the ISP header near the USB connector. (Assuming it is a code issue and not a hardware issue.

If it is fried then you can replace the device and program it from the code supplied by Arduino.

I am running the latest windows 10 and it is still detecting my board with no issues and it is using the old 8U2 chip with original firmware.
