USB-to-UART Recognition Issue Windows 7

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

Recently I received my ZedBoard after a long decision process I went through for choosing a development board. My intentions are to use it mostly for hardware design and yes it has a interesting smell (reminds me of soy-sauce).
My problem occurs when using the usb-uart bridge to communicate via terminal program. I connected the micro usb cable from J14 to my computers usb port several times like in the GettingStartedGuide p.11/p.12 described, but the drivers are not automatically installed by win7. So I manually installed the drivers like in the cypress CY7C64225 usb-to-uart setup guide described (several times), but the device is not recognized. The only way the drivers are automatically  installed correctly on the win7 machine and a serial connection can be obtained through the terminal software, is when a powered monitor is connected to the vga connector.
Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong here or do I allways have connected a monitor to the ZedBoard to communicate via the cypress device?

thanks and regards

I am running Windows 7 and the Cypress USB to UART works for me with no need for a VGA monitor.

Thanks Joe, good to know that other boards are functional!

Finally: the issue was generated through a malfunctional or bad soldered micro usb connector (1981584-1 TE Connectivity p.5 BOM). When the plug was pushed hardly into the connector, the drivers where correctly installed and the device recognized. According to post

    http://www.zedboard.org/content/watch-out-usb-micro-connectors-are-flimsy

the connector finally fell off (it could not withstand the stress). I'm going to replace it tomorrow.

    Hi pkarch3000,

Sorry for your troubles with ZedBoard USB-UART.  Most USB connectors have some sort of panel surrounding the connector to provide additional support.  Unfortunately, we do not have that option with ZedBoard as it is a development board meant to be left accessible on a benchtop.  Aside from adding the epoxy we have, we encourage you to be careful.  Perhaps leave your USB cables plugged in on the ZedBoard side as much as possible and perform your plug/unplugging on the PC side instead of on the ZedBoard side.

If you purchased your ZedBoard from Avnet, here is the email address you want to use to start the RMA process:

    em-web-messages@avnet.com

    Regards,

    -Kevin

    Thanks Kevin

I'll treat my new board as you advised. Today I received it and everything works fine.

I'm having an issue with the USB to UART drivers from Cypress.  When I connect the USB cable to my Windows 7 machine, sometimes it detects a Diligent device and installs drivers for a USB serial converter.  However, no comm ports are available under the device manager.  I've downloaded the CyUSBSerial_v3 drivers from Cypress but when I try and update the driver through device manager, it says no suitable drivers were found in the directory containing the drivers.  I'm a little lost now.

I just got my ZedBoard and tried to connect the USB cable. I have the same issue as evrl.
The Windows7 machine recognises the plugged usb cablke but the cypress driver isnu00B4t installed automatically. After manually installing the cypress drivers I still canu00B4t find the com port in the device manager.
How did you solve that problem?

There are two micro USB connectors on the Zedboard, J14 for the USB-UART and J17 for the USB JTAG connection. Make sure that you are connecting your USB cable from your Windows 7 machine to J14 for the UART connection and then turn the board on.

J14 on the ZedBoard is directly connected to the Cypress CY7C64225 USB UART device and is not available to the Zynq Programmable Logic (PL) section. The ZedBoard schematic can be downloaded here: http://zedboard.org/support/documentation/1521

If you want to implement a UART in the PL you will need to select device pins connected to one of the PL PMOD interfaces or the LPC interface. Likewise, if you want to use one of the Zynq Processing Section (PS) UARTS via the PL you will need to select 'EMIO' as the output connection and route via the PL to a PMOD or LPC connection.
