USB UART Driver Problems

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have several problems to connect my Zynq-7000 EPP 7Z020 ZedBoard via USB. I have downloaded the Cypress USB-UART driver here https://secure.cypress.com/?mpn=CY7C64225-28PVXC and followed the following instructions to install it: http://zedboard.org/sites/default/files/documentations/CY7C64225_Setup_Guide_1_3.pdf

The installation seemed to work fine but after I attached the ZedBoard I did not have the "CypressUsbConsoleWindowsDriver" list inside my Device Manager. The COM-Port is displayed but as "USB Serial Port (COM4)" and not as "Cypress Serial (COM4)". Apart from that, when I enter the advanced settings of the COM-Port I don't have the possibilty to enable "Port Persist". When I try to connect to the board using the program "Tera Term" it does not react and I do not get any answer inside the terminal.

I hope you can help me since I do not have any idea what I could have done wrong. I tried the whole procedure with two different PCs, one running Windows 7 and the other Windows 8.1.

Thank you very much in advance!

Yours sincerely,
Alexander T. Lange, German Aerospace Center (DLR)

    Hi Neha,

The technical support from Cypress is currently working on this. They wanted me to try annother driver installer, the "USB-Serial Driver Installer - Windows" available in the link: http://www.cypress.com/?rID=83110
Unfortunately it did not change anything for me but you could also try it if you want.

    Best Regards,
    Alex

    Hi Alex,

It just looks like that the COM-PORT representation has changed. Kindly look under device manager, specific COM Port->Driver, if you find Cypress seems like it might be working. Press BTN7 to reset and try visualizing on the tera term again with the specified baud rate.
    Worked for me!

    Alexander/Neha,

I'm glad you were so through in your investigations.
As far as I can tell, the new version of the Cypress driver seems to have the Persistent capability ON by default.

I've been able to install this on a clean machine.  I did see that it took a REALLY long time for the USB device to populate under device manager.  True that it does not show the "CypressUsbConsoleWindowsDriver".  The device does show up as a COM3 on my machine.

The trick to USING the persistent seems to be to just leave your TeraTerm open.  As long as I have that open, it seems to recognize that the port exists.  I've been able to power cycle my Zedboard as well as plug and unplug the USB UART port without issue.

To try to solve your issue, might I suggest that you plug in your Zedboard to the PC that you installed the driver new Cypress driver.  With a stock test boot image loaded on the SD Card, power on the Zedboard.  Then wait until after you see the DONE LED turn on.  At this point, you should see that the USB Serial Port (COM??) populated under the ports section of your Windows 7 machine.  Give a 10 count, just to make certain and then open TeraTerm.  Ensure that you are connecting at 115,200BAUD.

Again, for me, the FIRST time, it seemed to take my Windows 7x64 machine almost a minute before it recognized the board.  This was even though the board registered (windows dah-dinged) and the USB Serial Port device showed up.  This seemed to happen ONLY on the first try.  After that, it now plugs in and out as fast as I want.

Please let me know if this does not get you on to your next step.

    Hi Dan,

thanks for your help. It seems that my problem was not the driver (which just looks differently but works, as you said) but with my SD card. Everything is working fine now.

    Hi Folks,

Here is a related thread in which some new connections are getting assigned to a driver that comes from Windows Update.  I have included instructions for a workaround that works for me.  I am posting it here in case someone stumbles across this thread here first.
